Liberals lose stranglehold Toronto riding to Conservatives after 31 years
But I just had one thing to say, which is that we are feeling great about the result. That was Liberal Leslie Church just after midnight. She'd been leading all evening, but then at 4 AMA lead change that Conservative Don Stewart would never relinquish. There's a message that our voters would like to send to Mr. Trudeau, and that's one of change. The only way to get that is by elected Conservative government. Following the loss in Toronto, will you stay? Justin Trudeau, though, was not taking questions about the message that voters sent, nor about his own future. But he did make this statement. This was obviously not the result we wanted, but I want to be clear that I hear people's concerns and frustrations. These are not easy times, and it's clear that I and my entire Liberal team have much more work to do. Indeed, multiple polls have shown that, as frustrated as voters might be with Trudeau himself. They're also frustrated at a long list of broken Liberal promises. In any event, in Toronto St. Paul's, it was an upset for the ages. The last Conservative candidate to win there was Barbara McDougal in 1988, and Brian Mulroney was her leader. The Liberals won it in 1993 and have held it ever since. Carolyn Bennett was the MP for 26 years, and in 20/21 she beat her Conservative opponent by 25 points. But with Liberal support having evaporated in a stronghold like Saint Paul's, there are dozens of other Toronto area Liberal MPs who have less margin for error, like Liberal Ryan Turnbull, who won Whitby by less than nine points. Who are now being asked or are asking themselves if Justin Trudeau can lead them to victory. I know that he'll have to re-evaluate and and look at the results of last night's by-election and and do some reflecting, but that's up to him now. As for the Conservative Leader Pierre Polyev, he had no public appearances scheduled today, but he did post on social media asking for an immediate carbon tax election. That is unlikely. Trudeau and the Liberals will need all the runway they can get to turn around their sagging fortunes. Before the next general election must be called by the fall of 2025. Donna David Aiken, thanks.
