Cristiano Ronaldo kicked out in anger as he was substituted in the second half of Portugal's 2-0 defeat by Georgia.

Roberto Martinez's side ended their group stage campaign with a whimper but topped the group to set up a last 16 tie against Slovenia when the knock out stage gets underway.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Georges Mikautadze were on hand to net for the Georgians, who will take on Spain in a historic clash for the nation as they too progressed from Group F.

Ronaldo is yet to score at the tournament and drew another blank on Wednesday night, despite having a number of shots on goal with his frustration growing as the game wore on.

He was withdrawn by Martinez after 66 minutes, replaced by Goncalo Ramos, but didn't take the substitution well as he lashed out, kicking the turf as he made his way to his seat.

He made his frustrations known on the field in Shalke as things didn't go his way once again

The forward appeared calm as his number was raised to be withdrawn, looking for a team-mate to hand his captain's armband to as boos rang around the Veltins-Arena in Shalke.

He then made his way to the touchline with Antonio Silva, wishing Ramos and Nelson Semedo good luck with a high-five and walking past Martinez.

The 39-year-old received a pat on the back from the former Everton boss, looking down and appearing frustrated as other members of the Portugal coaching staff patted him on the back.

He then lashed out, with other team-mates patting him on the back as he took a seat, slumped in his chair.

It was a frustrating game for Ronaldo, who has started all three games for his side in Germany but remains without a goal.

Questions have been raised over whether he could still compete at the highest level on the back of a season-and-a-half in Saudi Arabia, where he remains without a major trophy with Al-Nassr.

He had been booked after just 28 minutes for his protests after a penalty appeal was turned away, and was perhaps lucky not to receive a second as he continued his arguments.

As he tried to control a cross, Ronaldo was seemingly pulled to the ground by Luka Lochoshvili, but Ukrainian referee Mykola Balakin waived play on and VAR deemed the decision correct.

In response, Ronaldo approached the offical to signal he felt he had been pulled down by the shirt, but was adjudged to have gone too far and received a yellow card for his troubles.

He also expressed his frustration at half time as he players left the pitch and argued against a decision to book Pedro Neto for simulation.

Portugal have been below par at the tournament so far, despite winning two of their three matches in the group stage in Germany.

After beating creeping past Czechia in their opener, they beat Turkey 3-0, but fell flat in the final game as Georgia shocked the 2016 winners to pick up what was their first-ever major tournament win.

Martinez did rotate his side, however, and will bring back in the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias for his side's last 16 tie against Slovenia.
