Union representing WestJet mechanics issue strike notice in time for busy travel weekend
It could be a mess for WestJet travelers ahead of Canada Day, with close to 70,000 travelers expected to make their way through YVR over the course of the long weekend and more disruptions could be in store for the Canadian carrier. This could not come at a worse time and So what we saw, like the last time the strike notice was issued W yet may start as early as today, I think start to get their planes back, cancel flights, get their crew back. Is the second strike notice in less than two weeks as bargaining took a bit of a turn. WestJet said the notice came Tuesday, less than a day back at the table with the Aircraft Mechanics for Eternal Association, the airline is claiming. WestJet presented the union with its latest Canadian industry-leading offer. It was swiftly dismissed in a strike notification issued, leaving us with no choice but to follow with a lockout notice to manage travel disruption to hundreds of thousands of guests. The union claims these negotiations resumed under inauspicious circumstances. WestJet CEO had made public statements that there would be no economic improvements. The company has asserted to the CIRB that further negotiations would be a futility. Strike action could start as early as Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM heading into the long weekend, but these travelers taking it all in stride. We're just trying to be positive and enjoy our holiday, not worry about it. We would just enjoy more time in Cabo. We're we're OK, so not terribly concerned. But sunny skies may not be on the horizon for all, with WestJet expected to start canceling flights, a move it says is necessary.
