BMW 6-Series Reportedly Returning in 2026, but BMW Denies It

UPDATE 6/26/24: Car and Driver reached out to BMW for comment on an Automotive News report that claims the 6-series coupe and convertible will be returning in 2026. A BMW spokesperson responding with the following, "... we feel it necessary to clarify that there are currently no plans to reintroduce the BMW 6-series to the market for model year 2026, despite what is being widely speculated in automotive media circles."

A familiar BMW nameplate could return to the streets sometime in 2026. The two-door BMW 6-series' revival was first reported by Automotive News, citing an industry source who works on the supply chain.

The new 6-series will be sold as a coupe and convertible that will be based on BMW's next-gen Cluster Architecture (CLAR). The report also claims that the future 6er will go on sale sometime in the second half of 2026, with production set to begin at BMW's factory in Dingolfing, Germany, in the middle of that year.

CLAR supports gas-only, gas-electric, and all-electric powertrains. While it's unclear whether the new BMW 6-series, which would likely be a 2027 model, will be available with all three of those powertrains, it seems probable considering that's the strategy BMW is employing with the newly redesigned 5-series sedan.

A BMW bearing the 6-series badge was last sold for the 2019 model year, however, that was the four-door Gran Coupe—not to be confused with the bulbous Gran Turismo hatchback that also exited showrooms after that year. The coupe and convertible were last sold as 2018 models, which were available with either a 315-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six (640i) or a 445-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 (650i).
