'It is sad to see how in the 21st Century you have to read certain retrograde and completely out of place comments. I hope this changes soon.'

Hermoso has now broken her silence after posting another photo of her soaking up the sun and describing those behind the abuse as 'cave-like people'.

'At this point these types of comments do not affect me at all, but I understand that there are people who may feel affected when they receive them,' she said.

'Then it occurs to us to ask ourselves if it is necessary to show our faces so that one day all these cave-like people become extinct.

'I am clear that it is rare for it to happen, but we must continue to be as free as we are and for no reason should we stop doing so.'

She then added: 'Here I leave you another photo, which I know you like, this time more covert. Let's see what stupid thing you can think of to write now.'

Meanwhile, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, will stand trial for sexual assault over his kissing of Hermoso at the World Cup.

The kiss, which Hermoso and her team-mates said was unwanted, marred Spain's 1-0 victory against England last year and made headlines globally.

Rubiales was forced to resign but has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

A Spanish High Court judge also said he is facing one charge of coercion.
