My Lady Jane: how to watch free and all we know about Amazon's Bridgerton rival

Amazon is set to launch a new period drama sure to scratch the itch of Bridgerton fans. Launching later this month, My Lady Jane is an alternate history drama centred around real-life monarch Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for nine days before she was beheaded.

Billed as an ‘alt-fantasy Tudor romantasy’ the eight-part series is inspired by the best-selling novel from co-authors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadow. My Lady Jane promises to deliver the heart-stopping Tudor romance so popular among Bridgerton fans, but with more swashbuckling action.

The series comes from Brooklyn Girls’ Gemma Burgess and The Boys’ Meredith Glynn, who both serve as co-showrunners and executive producer. Speaking to Radio Times, Burgess revealed the series takes inspiration from a handful of real and fictional sources.

“Many people know that Lady Jane Grey was married against her will, made Queen for nine days, then put in the Tower and shortly thereafter beheaded. Our show is about what might have happened if history was different and if she hadn’t died,” she said.

“It’s a silly, fun, smart, swashbuckling, rambunctious alternative history. It’s The Princess Bride meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Blackadder.”

So if that sounds up your street, here’s everything you need to know about My Lady Jane.

What is My Lady Jane about?

My Lady Jane is a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded and neither is her husband Guildford. At the centre of the series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane, a young Tudor noblewoman who is shocked to be crowned queen and finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown – and her head.
