A Lancet Study Says Half Of India's Population Is Physically Unfit | N18V | CNBC TV18
Half of India is physically unfit. Global health magazine The Lancet has revealed that half of Indias adult population does not meet the standards of sufficient physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization. The report also says that women are less active than men. So what is the standard set by the World Health Organization? The 2020 WHO physical activity guidelines recommend adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity. Individuals not meeting this recommendations are considered to be insufficiently physically active. Most alarmingly, the prevalence of insufficient physical activity among Indian adults has risen sharply from 22.3% in 2000 to 49.4% in 2022. Insufficient physical activity increases the risk of noncommunicable diseases, poor physical and cognitive function, weight gain, and mental ill health. The Lancet report said that nearly 1/3 of adults globally, approximately 1.8 billion people, failed to meet the recommended physical activity in 2022. The team also founded around the world. Older adults, both men and women aged 60 years and above, were increasingly engaging in insufficient physical activity in the Indian context. Such findings are alarming because according to a 2023 Indian Council of Medical Research study or ICMR study, 101 million people in India were estimated to be diabetic in 2021 and about 315,000,000 had hypertension the same year. Further, 254,000,000 were estimated to have obesity and 185,000,000 estimated to have high levels of bad cholesterol. India has the 12th highest prevalence of insufficient physical activity among 195 countries. Another concerning aspect of this report is a low level of physical activity among women. Experts say its because many women wrongly believe that household chores are a good form of physical exercise but that is not true. Make informed decisions with comprehensive analysis on the go.
