PETALING JAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has raised RM55,000 within 24 hours of his “Langkah Muar”, a 200km “protest run” from his constituency to the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur.
The amount is 55% of his RM100,000 target, intended for community service centres in his constituency.
In a Facebook reel, Syed Saddiq shared that he had completed 70km of his run and planned to make a “pit stop” in Seremban to rest before continuing tomorrow.
“I would like to share that within 24 hours, we have managed to collect RM55,000,” he said.
He said many supporters from diverse backgrounds were waiting by the roadside and this helped to motivate him.
He also said that two individuals had donated cash directly to him for the cause.
“When my legs were about to cramp up, their cheers helped ease the discomfort and raised my spirits. I am grateful to them,” he said.
Syed Saddiq began his run on Friday to protest the lack of allocations for opposition MPs.
He said he has complied with the government’s requests to negotiate for an allocation and has met deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof twice, but these discussions have not yielded any results so far.
“Hence, I am using my legs to raise funds as a form of protest,” he said.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Perikatan Nasional chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan was slated to meet Fadillah to discuss allocations for opposition MPs.
Fadillah had previously said a memorandum of understanding on the allocations was being finalised. When ready, copies would be distributed to all political parties for review, he said.
