Report: Dolphins unwilling to give Tua Tagovailoa a ‘market value’ contract
With the Green Bay Packers’ contract extension with quarterback Jordan Love on the horizon, it’s important to keep in the loop with other quarterback contract situations around the league. Along with Love, the two other major quarterbacks going into contract years in 2024 are the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott and the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa.
It appears that the Cowboys, who are the only team set to spend less cash on their roster than the 2024 Packers as it stands today, are going to let Prescott play out the season, which is risky considering his no-tag and no-trade clauses. The Dolphins, though, have had contract talks with Tagovailoa, even if they seem to be leading to a road to nowhere.
ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported on Tuesday that the Dolphins “are not offering the contract that is market value,” adding, “Based on my conversations, they are not in the Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence ballpark.” Those two contracts are significant, as Goff brought in $53 million per year on his extension this offseason while Lawrence hit Joe Burrow’s $55 million per season number, which ties them as the highest-paid players in the history of the sport.
So if there were worries that the Packers needed to ink Love before Prescott or Tagovailoa reach extensions with their respective teams, it doesn’t seem like there’s much of a race going on. Green Bay seems the closest to an extension with their quarterback. The team has stated previously that they’re hoping to get a deal done with Love before the start of training camp late in July.
As ESPN’s Mina Kimes said on NFL Live on Tuesday: Pay the man. The cost of quarterbacks only goes up as more passers sign multi-year contracts. The Packers are poised to have the next extension on the books, if Darlington’s reporting on the Dolphins-Tagovailoa situation is correct. The team would have to fumble it out of the end zone at the goal line to mess this one up.
