Plans for change of use from bookmakers to public museum in Kerry
Full planning permission is being sought for change of use from a bookmakers to a public museum in Castleisland in North Kerry.
The planning applicant – Castleisland Community Museum Ltd – submitted its application after being gifted the use of the ground floor of the premises at No. 42 Maine Street for use as a museum.
The development also includes provision for new front signage to be erected. The application was received by Kerry County Council on May 27, 2024.
The building’s proprietor, Mr Tom McCarthy, has given his consent ahead of the planning application. The building is not occupied at the present time.
Established in September 2023, Castleisland Community Museum Ltd is a local organisation set up to highlight many aspects of local history in Castleisland such as its railway, Desmond Castle, and other notable landmarks.
The new museum premises would serve as a focal point for this work and for showcasing local history to the wider public.
In December 2000, No. 42 Maine Street received planning permission for change of use from a gift shop to a bookmakers.
