A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after Joanna Derkacz was found inside a house on Nevinson Way in the Hampshire town at 11.30am on Thursday, December 28.

Joanna’s sister, on behalf of her family, released a tribute to their ‘sweet angel’ and said they would ‘miss her so much every day’.

Joanna’s sister wrote in a poem: ‘We will love you always sweet angel. You didn’t deserve this. I’ll fight for the justice till my last breath. I promise.’

The arrested man, 36, was treated for injuries to his arms at the scene and is being questioned in custody by detectives on suspicion of murder and criminal damage.

At a virtual hearing with Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 3, a warrant of further detention was granted to allow detectives further time to interview the man until Friday, January 5.

Due to previous police contact in the weeks before Joanna’s death, police made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who are now conducting an independent investigation into the prior police contact.

Friends, colleagues, and members of the Polish community, to which recruitment agent Joanna belonged, have been gathering virtually and in person to pay their respects.

Viola Signejeva, a friend and colleague, shared her fond memories of Joanna, saying: ‘I am happy to have known Jo not only as a colleague but also as a very good friend.

She has always been a source of positivity, energy, and enthusiasm. It’s too early for her. Rest in peace, Jo. I miss you and send my deepest condolences to your family and friends.’

Aniya Malkosz, another close friend, expressed her sorrow, saying, ‘I can’t imagine I will never see you again. Nothing will ever be the same without you here… I miss you. Goodbye, Sunshine.’
