Road safety important over the holiday season

Road safety is important over the holiday season, says the Arrive Alive campaign as local highways and roads are about to experience more traffic than usual over what’s left of the year.

Travel plans mean that many South Africans are about to go somewhere, or head towards where they call home; roads are busier and more congested during this time, and there’s a higher potential accident risk during the last parts of the year.

If you’re going anywhere to cap the year, make sure that you (and other drivers) remain safe.

Here’s what you should know about festive season safety, and how to prepare for anything.

Road safety important over the holiday season

The Arrive Alive campaign was started in 2001 to emphasize the importance of road safety, according to the Western Cape government.

It becomes especially important over the holiday season, when traffic is at one of its heights for the year – and when people are more likely to travel across long distances.

As part of safety, never drive when you are tired or inebriated – and always remain conscious of the roads’ rules and other drivers on the road.

Road safety tips

More road safety tips are provided through the Arrive Alive campaign, including to never exceed the speed limit – and to stay in the appropriate lane.

Ensure that your car is best prepared for the trip ahead, and make sure that you know what to do in the event of an emergency. Never drive past (or into) accidents: instead, dispatch emergency services through 112.

Roads and weather

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) have warned that South Africa might still experience rain and storms in some provinces, including Gauteng, North-West and Kwazulu-Natal.

If you are caught in a storm, pull over rather than attempting to drive through heavy conditions that could be more dangerous.

Drive safe to all South Africans

From the team at The South African, wishing everyone a safe season – no matter where in the world you might be reading this from. If you have feedback about this story (or any others), let us know what you think at [email protected].
