BAD NEWS: Bafana likely to play this team if they reach last 16
Bafana Bafana’s emphatic 4-0 win over Namibia has brought them back in contention to reach the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations.
Following their 2-0 opening match defeat to Mali, Hugo Broos made two changes against the Brave Warriors with Grant Kekana and Thapelo Morena replacing Siyanda Xulu and Thapelo Maseko.
A brace from Themba Zwane and goals from Percy Tau and Maseko helped Bafana get their first Afcon win of 2023.
Broos’ men are second in Group E behind Mali, who have four points from two games. Bafana play Tunisia in their last match knowing that a draw should secure their spot in the round of 16, but defeat could eliminate them from the competition depending on other results.
Bafana’s potential last 16 opponents
As things stand, Bafana are likely to play Morocco in the last 16. If the Atlas Lions can secure a draw or win against Zambia in their final group match, they will play Group E runners up which could be South Africa.
Bafana, still have Tunisia to deal but the odds are in their favour to grab a draw or win after the African giants failed to fire in their first two games.
If Mali fails to beat Namibia and Bafana wins, then Broos‘ side could face Algeria, who are likely to finish second in their group.
The final group matches will be played on Wednesday evening and only then, we will have an idea who plays who in the Knockout rounds.
As things stand, Bafana are destined to get a North African team if they reach the last 16.
