Zack Snyder’s thoughts on James Gunn’s DC universe vision
Zack Snyder, known for his work on DC movies like ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, has shared his thoughts on James Gunn’s direction with the new DC Universe (DCU). Snyder has become synonymous with DC adaptations, especially after his highly anticipated Justice League director’s cut. But now, the DC Universe is under new leadership with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm. So what does Snyder think about this shift?
In an interview with ComicBook Resources (CBR), Zack Snyder expressed his optimism about Gunn’s approach. ‘He really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then he was down. He was in. Let’s see what happens. He is pretty excited… he mean, they’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so they’ll see what that’s like,” Snyder stated.
James Gunn, who is known for his work with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, took over DC Studios with Peter Safran. He acknowledged that Zack Snyder had reached out to him, saying, ‘he didn’t [see the interview] but he knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process.” This exchange shows that despite their different styles, there’s a mutual respect between the two directors.
Interestingly, both Snyder’s and Gunn’s DC universes share some common elements. Both started their journeys with a Superman film, with Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013 and Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie in 2025. There’s also a parallel in timing with standalone Batman movies preceding their respective Superman films: 2008’s The Dark Knight before Man of Steel, and 2021’s The Batman before Gunn’s Superman film.
Beyond that, both directors focused on bringing lesser-known DC teams to the big screen. Snyder introduced the Suicide Squad in 2016, while Gunn has plans for The Authority. Additionally, both have highlighted films starring female DC characters, with Snyder’s Wonder Woman in 2017 and Gunn’s upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Despite the inevitable comparisons between the two DC universes, Snyder’s supportive attitude suggests that he’s excited to see where Gunn and Safran will take the DC Universe. It will be interesting to watch how these two versions of the DC Universe will coexist and evolve over time.
