What do England need to do to qualify for Euro 2024 knockout stages after Denmark draw?

England failed to book their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 after being held to a draw against Denmark.

Despite Harry Kane’s early opener, the Three Lions turned in a woeful display after Morten Hjulmand’s stunning equaliser.

It means England have four points from their opening two games after their 1-0 victory over Serbia on Sunday courtesy of a bullet header from Jude Bellingham.

Serbia’s late equaliser against Slovenia earlier on Thursday afternoon meant England would have qualified as group winners with a win over Denmark.

Here’s what England need to do to qualify for the Round of 16 at Euro 2024.

With one game left to play in Group C, they are still top on four points. Denmark and Slovenia are both on two points behind them with Serbia fourth with a single point to their name.

Simply put, victory against Slovenia on Tuesday will be enough for England to qualify as group winners. A draw will even be good enough if Denmark fail to beat Serbia,

Who could England play in last 16 of Euro 2024?

Qualifying as group winners is still a very attainable target and should they do that, England will face a third-pace team from either Group D, Group E or Group F.

Of course, there is still plenty of football to be played in those groups with no group winners confirmed at the time of writing.

In Group D, France and Netherlands, who meet on Friday night, both won their opening games with three points to their name. It is unlikely those nations will finish in third place, leaving the most likely options from that group as Poland or Austria.

In Group E, Romania and Slovakia are both on three points after wins over Ukraine and Belgium respectively. While they are currently in pole position to qualify as group winners, that group remains very open.

In Group F, Turkey and Portugal picked up wins over Georgia and Czech Republic with those two nations looking good to qualify as winners and runners up respectively.

While plenty could change, that would leave Georgia and Czech Republic as the most likely options.

When is England’s round of 16 game?

If they qualify as group winners, England’s first knockout game will take place at 5pm on Sunday 30 June in Gelsenkirchen.

Germany became the first team to reach the knockout stages of the competition on Tuesday evening.

After thrashing Scotland 5-1 in their opening game, the hosts booked their place in the next round with a 2-0 win over Hungary.
