Flyers Are Ready For Matvei Michkov To Join NHL, Whenever That Might Be
During his pre-draft availability, Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere said there isn't a timetable for top prospect Matvei Michkov's arrival.
"If they tell us he's coming on September 1st, we'll jump on it," Briere said about Michkov. "The mindset for us is still, we're going into the next season without him."
There have been many rumors swirling about when Michkov could join the Flyers. There have been reports that he will turn to North America this season as long as he plays in the NHL.
Briere admitted that he thought he would know more by the end of June but doesn't have much update on the status.
When pressed about other possible Russian draft picks in the 2024 NHL Draft, Briere said that it hasn't scared the Flyers in the past.
"It didn't scare us in the past, so I think you have your answer there. It has to make sense," Briere said about possibly drafting another Russian prospect. "We're evaluating the risk and your return. We've shown that if it does make sense, we will go there. They're certainly at the top of the draft again. There are some really good players that are from Russia."
While there is no real clarity on the Michkov timeline, Briere still seems optimistic that if the Flyers must wait out the final two years of his KHL contract, the winger will still go to the NHL.
