Before Euro 2024 began, the idea that one of Belgium and Romania would be entering their matchday two clash off the back of a solid win and the other after a disappointing defeat would not have seemed so alien.
However, that it is Romania buoyed by hammering Ukraine and Belgium dismayed by losing to Slovakia was not on many people’s betting slips.
The Red Devils are in something of a last-chance saloon to make good on their much-vaunted golden generation and the auspicious start to their tournament does not bode well.
Of course, there is a long way to go at this Euros and a Belgian win in Cologne on Monday will put them back in the picture to go deep.
The unfancied Romanians, meanwhile, know that a three-goal win already has them among the favourites to reach the knockouts with a point basically guaranteeing their progression.

Belgium vs Romania team news
Domenico Tedesco will hope Arthur Theate and Jan Vertonghen are fit to bolster his defence after a surprise start for Yannick Carrasco at left-back failed to pay off against Slovakia.
Youri Tielemans could add some creativity to the midfield and a move to three at the back cannot be ruled out.
Romania are still waiting on veteran striker Denis Alibec’s return from injury and are unlikely to tinker with a side which hammered Ukraine to open their tournament.

Confidence is flowing through Romania but Belgium didn’t actually play that badly against Slovakia. With a little bit more luck, they should put their first points on the board here.
