Until Dawn Remake May Have Timed its Release Window Poorly
- Horror games remain a staple in gaming, with recent critically acclaimed releases like Resident Evil 2 Remake.
- The upcoming Until Dawn remake by Ballistic Moon features improved visuals, sound, and expanded story elements.
- Facing tough competition in Fall 2024 from Silent Hill 2 remake, Slitterhead, and other horror titles, Until Dawn might struggle to stand out.
Horror games have existed almost as long as the medium itself, and they've remained a staple genre of the gaming landscape ever since. The horror genre has only grown more popular as time has gone on, with the last few years heralding the release of some of the most critically acclaimed horror games of all time, from Resident Evil 2 Remake to Alan Wake 2, and a whole slew of great games in between. Hopefully, the upcoming Until Dawn remake will find itself somewhere on that list in the near future.
Being developed by Ballistic Moon – a new UK studio – the Until Dawn remake is a ground-up reimagining of the hit 2015 narrative-driven horror game. Officially announced in January and then shown off properly at the recent State of Play, the Until Dawn remake is making some decent changes to the original game, such as improved visuals and sound, new animations, and an expanded story, but those changes might not be enough to set the game apart from the crowd this Fall.

The Until Dawn Remake Could Have a Lot of Competition
Fall Is Already Packed with Horror Releases
At the time of writing, the Until Dawn remake is set for a Fall 2024 release, meaning it could land anywhere between September and December, with its most likely window being October-November. While this is a perfect release window for a popular horror game like Until Dawn, it's far from the only horror title releasing during this period.
On October 8, 2024, the long-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake is finally set to launch. Originally announced back in October 2022, the Silent Hill 2 remake has been one of the most anticipated horror games for a while now, and though recent gameplay trailers have shown some stiff animations and some surprisingly blurry textures, many fans are still looking forward to seeing the classic PS2 game get a modernized overhaul. Exactly a month later, Slitterhead is set to release. Another highly anticipated horror game, Slitterhead was first announced in 2021 and has gained quite a loyal following since, and after an intriguing gameplay trailer aired during the recent State of Play, that following has grown even more.
As if Silent Hill 2 remake and Slitterhead weren't enough to contend with already, Until Dawn may also be going head-to-head with a handful of other horror games that don't currently have concrete release dates. The Dead by Daylight spin-off The Casting of Frank Stone is set to release sometime in 2024, which poses a significant threat to Until Dawn as it's being developed by Until Dawn's original creators, Supermassive. A new Quiet Place game has also just been announced with a 2024 release date. And there are a slew of Blumhouse Indie horrors set to release soon, with Fear the Spotlight confirmed for a 2024 release.
Until Dawn Remake Might Have a Hard Time Standing Out From the Crowd
The Until Dawn remake is a known quantity, and this is both a blessing and a curse for the upcoming game. While fans are excited about experiencing the story of Until Dawn again in a new way, it is still a story that many have experienced before. And though this remake is making some sizable changes, it'll likely still play similarly to the original 2015 version in at least a few ways. There are a lot of original horror games coming out in 2024, and Until Dawn might struggle to keep itself in the same conversation as them.
