Boston Celtics fans are in a state of great joy after Jayson Tatum and company got the job done in the 2024 NBA Finals on Monday night versus the Dallas Mavericks. With a 106-88 win at home over the Mavs, Boston finally captured its franchise’s 18th overall NBA championship – and also triggered wild celebrations across Celtics nation.
Barstool founder Dave Portnoy even floated the idea that this current Celtics squad might be the “greatest” NBA team ever.
“We need to start the discussion of whether this is the greatest team in the history of the NBA. They were that good. #banner18 #celtics”
While there is no denying that the Celtics had an impressive run in the 2023-24 NBA campaign, Portnoy’s assertion should be up for debate. Even other championship-winning Boston teams in the past have a case for the best team ever title.
In any case, the Celtics managed to top their season with a title that many thought was for Boston to lose.
The Celtics finished the regular season with a 64-18 record, the only team with more than 57 wins. They lost just twice throughout the first two rounds in the 2024 NBA Playoffs before sweeping the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals. The Mavs were also no match for Boston, which dominated Dallas on both ends of the floor.
