How this 27-year-old turned her side hustle into a business bringing in $25,000 a month
It's our favorite time of week. Well that and Friday night, it's time for Make It Mondays. Tonight we meet Liz Chick, the founder and CEO of Rec Create Collective in Brooklyn, NY. Rec Create is a creative event space that offers pop up classes, craft making events. It's so much more. And here's how Liz turned her artistic side hustle into her dream full time job. I love that you all just like jumped in and we're like, I'm going to learn something new tonight even though I have no idea what it is. The mission of this project is really just to build creative community. I'm Liz Tick, I'm 27 years old. I turned my side hustle into my dream job and last month was able to bring in $25,000. Hi everybody, thank you so much for your attention. Our great collective is a creative event space in Brooklyn, NY. I hope 20 somethings who are looking for creative outlets and community come together over all different kinds of creative arts and craft focused events. We have a collage club that at this point happens almost weekly. I also partner with a lot of different local artists and small businesses and produce workshops with them. This is Nick club with Alan and Hawk. She does a lot of these knitting events. In September of 2022, while I was actually on a call resigning from my last full time job that I've ever had, I I found out that I actually won $50,000 in a sweet steaks, which ended up being like all of the seed money that started this project. I am running about like 15 events a month right now. Our cheapest event is $35 which is at Collage Club for kind of more niche artist workshops that are a little bit more material intensive and require a little bit more specialized knowledge. Those can go up to like 130I. I've brought in close to $150,000 since starting this business last March. So January I was able to pay myself $4750 and I'm moving it up to 5500 this month. I just feel like beyond grateful every day to like wake up and do work that I love and create room for people to be creative and to connect, to hear like almost every single day, like how impactful this work is to people. And that's just like so special. And Liz Chick joins us now. Liz, congratulations. I want to know more about these sweepstakes. That's fascinating. Hi. Thank you so much for having me. Yeah, I just entered in to. I didn't even know that I entered the sweepstakes. I was just looking into refinancing my loan, my college loans, and I was checking the rate on different sites. And I got an e-mail a few months later that said, congratulations, you won. And I was like, what, Like that's probably spam, but it's so rare that those make it to your inbox these days. And so I was like, I'll just Google it. And I found the sweepstakes, but I was like, but I still didn't enter the sweepstakes. And then I read kind of like the bylaws or whatever in there and they said all you had to do was check your rate in order to enter. So I turns out I entered and I won. Wow. By the way, you're in a space with some pretty big national franchises. We have something near me called Color Me Minds. It's not exactly the same thing. I totally get that. But you have some big competition. How do you stand out? How are you going to win? Yeah, I think just creating really unique experiences that people haven't had before. I think especially in the city, people, there's so many things to do here, but people are always looking for like the coolest, freshest thing that they can do. And so just by partnering with these local artists that people really love that are super relevant and designing these really specialty workshops that you can't just get everywhere else, that's how we stand out. Yeah. Truly remarkable story rec create collective. I hope I pronounced that right. Liz, Liz Chicken, Brooklyn, NY Congratulations and thanks for coming on CNBC and MAKE it Monday. Maybe we'll see you in there.
