Poland vs. Netherlands final score, result: Wout Weghorst the hero in Euro 2024 Group D clash

The Netherlands kicked off their 2024 European Championship with a narrow victory over Poland thanks to a late strike from super-sub Wout Weghorst.

Ronald Koeman's side fell behind early in the first half thanks to a fine header from Adam Buksa, who made his Euros debut after starting up top in place of the injured Robert Lewandowski.

Buksa beat Oranje's skipper, Virgil van Dijk, in the air and headed past Bart Verbruggen to give Poland a shock lead. It was only Buksa's second goal in his past 12 appearances for Poland and his first at a major international tournament.

Starting lineups:

Poland (3-5-1-1):  Szczesny (GK) — Frankowski, Bednarek, Salamon, Kiwior — Urbanski, Romanczuk, Zielinski, Zalewski — Szymanski — Buksa.

Netherlands (4-3-3): Verbruggen (GK) — Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake — Reijnders, Schouten, Veerman — Gakpo, Simons, Memphis.

The Netherlands reacted well to falling behind and had Poland's backs to the wall as they pushed for an equaliser. Cody Gakpo drew his side level shortly before the half-hour mark as his effort from the edge of the box took a criminal deflection to beat Wojciech Szczesny, who made a series of fine saves.

Gakpo has now scored the opening goal of the tournament for the Netherlands at both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. It was his fourth goal in seven games at major international tournaments for his country.

The two sides headed into the break level and Koeman's team came out on the front foot. Memphis Depay had a glorious opportunity to fire his side into the lead but sliced the strike wide.

As the game went on, Poland continued with their game plan of counterattacking but this did leave them open at times at the back. Koeman then switched up the tactics as he looked to go long with the introduction of Weghorst.

The former Manchester United striker was on the pitch for less than a minute and scored with his first touch of the game. Manchester City defender Nathan Ake slipped a ball into the box for the Dutchman to sweep past former Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny.

These could prove to be three vital points in Group D for the Netherlands as they have France and Austria still to play.

Poland vs. Netherlands live updates, highlights from Euro 2024

FT: The Netherlands hang on! Boy did they have to work hard for those three points!

90+4 minute: CLOSE! Zalewski forces Verbruggen into a fine save late on and that just might be the last chance for Poland.

90th minute: There will be five minutes of added time.

82nd minute: On comes Wout Weghorst for Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong for Memphis.

80th minute: This really could go either way, Poland are still causing the Netherlands problems from set-pieces but Oranje are spending the majority of these latter stages in the final third.

73rd minute: Memphis fires in an out-swinging corner and De Vrij meets it with power but too much power and it's over the bar.

62nd minute: Veerman and Simons are replaced by Wijnaldum and Malen as Koeman looks to freshen things up.

42nd minute: Another sweet move by the Netherlands sees Ake in space on the left and he picks out Gakpo who tries to flick it past Szczesny but it's too high.

29th minute: GOALLL! There you have it! Gakpo has the Netherlands back on level terms. It has a huge deflection off Salamon to get the better of Verbruggen.

28th minute: It can only be a matter of time before the Netherlands draw level, they're knocking at Poland's door.

22nd minute: Another glorious opportunity for the Netherlands to find an equaliser. Memphis fires high over the bar as he snatches at the ball in the box.

20th minute: The Netherlands have a corner routine of their own as Van Dijk hits a sweet volley into the ground but Szczesny makes an incredible save.

16th minute: GOALLL! POLAND LEAD! Buksa gets ahead of Van Dijk at the corner and heads past Verbruggen. It was the perfect corner routine.

15th minute: Memphis produces a fine piece of skill down the left to create space and he manages to find Veerman who plays the ball out to Simons but he wastes a long-range effort.

8th minute: Reijnders has another opportunity for the Oranje but he can't quite hit the target after another nice move from the Netherlands.

2nd minute: Gakpo tests Szczesny as he tries to sneak a strike inside the near post but the Liverpool man is denied early.

Poland vs. Netherlands lineups, team news, starting 11

Poland will be without their top scorer Robert Lewandowski and Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik after being ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury suffered during the June 7 friendly against Ukraine.

Coach Michal Probierz will need to get creative with his attack. Karol Swiderski, despite an ankle problem, might play as a false nine. Alternatively, Krzysztof Piatek could lead the line.

In goal, experienced Wojciech Szczesny, with 82 caps, will start. Piotr Zielinski, another Italy-based player, will aim to control the midfield.

Poland predicted lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): (3-5-1-1):  Szczesny (GK) — Bednarek, Dawidowicz, Kiwior — Frankowski, Slisz, Piotrowski, Moder, Zalewski — Zielinski — Buksa.

Poland subs (max 15): Matchday squad released one hour prior to kickoff

The Netherlands also suffered injury blows ahead of Euro 2024. Frenkie de Jong, Marten De Roon, and Teun Koopmeiners were all forced to stay at home to blow a hole in Ronald Koeman's midfield plans.

Borussia Dortmund full-back Ian Maatsen has been called up but Nathan Ake or Micky van de Ven are expected to start on the left side of defence.

Memphis Depay is expected to lead the line in Brian Brobbery's injury absence, with Wout Weghorst a likely option off the bench. Denzel Dumfries, who provided five assists in qualifying, is likely to feature on the right, facing competition from Jeremie Frimpong.

Netherlands predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen (GK) — Dumfries, Van Dijk, Ake, Van de Ven — Schouten, Veerman — Simons, Reijnders, Gakpo — Depay.
