Hull KR's Ryan Hall reveals Danny McGuire meeting ahead of breaking Super League record
Hull KR star Ryan Hall revealed he spent yesterday morning with Danny McGuire - hours before breaking his former Leeds team-mate’s Super League try-scoring record.
The England winger grabbed a late brace in Rovers’ 32-6 win over Huddersfield last night to, firstly, draw level with McGuire’s 247 competition tries and then go beyond it amid jubilant scenes at Craven Park. Hall, 36, was asked if McGuire - who won six Grand Finals alongside him in Leeds colours - had discussed the record much with him. He replied: “I’ve seen seen him today actually.
“We went for a coffee and he mentioned it all tongue-in-cheek. It’s never serious. He said I’m bound to score tonight but I wasn’t sure as I’d not touched the ball much in recent weeks! But it’s good to get it done. And it’s like buses… none come in six weeks and then two come along!”
Hall, who has scored 58 tries in 93 games for KR since joining KR from Sydney Roosters in 2021, had been stuck on 246 Super League tries since May 4 and hadn’t crossed in any of his last four outings. He admitted: “I'm very pleased because it's a monkey off my back. I tried not to make a big deal of it but everyone jumped on me. The crowd paid their tribute which was really nice, and it was good to do it at home and get it done.”
Hall, who scored 233 tries in 330 games across all competitions for hometown Leeds and rejoins them in 2025, maintained he hadn’t been thinking too much about the record. He said: “Only when other people force it on me through social media. Sky got in touch the week before the Warrington game on the Wednesday asking what sort of videos I wanted playing when I scored.
“I don't go out thinking I'm going to score this week; it's about doing things for the team, and if opportunities arise, I'll do my best to score. It set me back a bit and took me a while to get back right. We got it done tonight, finally."

On the favourite of his 248 Super League tries, he added: “There’s a couple. [Ex-Leeds boss] Brian McClennan sent me a 'well done' video message and he mentioned the try in the 2008 Grand Final. It was a bit out of character - me kicking the ball - but it was a real first significant try: a try in a final. That set me up in my career.
“I was squad number 22 back then and the year after got five and been five ever since so that was significant. But obviously the Huddersfield try in 2015 to get the League Leaders’ Shield, that was up there, too.”
Meanwhile, Hall saluted the Robins fans who have made him one of their own. He said: “I’m going back to Leeds next year, and people refer to me as a Rhino. But I’d like to say I’m equally a Robin as well. I'm proud to have played in the red and white of Hull and done what I have for the club, and since I’ve been at the club, it’s been on an upward trajectory.

“We haven't finished yet; we've still a lot to play for this year. We’re in a great position, and that’s what it’s all about—not the personal accolades; it's about the team doing well and the club going from where it’s been over the last decade to where it is now. Laying some good foundations and being part of that is fulfilling.
"The crowd was really pleasing tonight and it was really humbling for them to sing for me like that. I'll definitely remember that. A lot of hard work went into the game, let's not forget we played a game of rugby. It was quite late on when I scored and that eclipsed everything that went on."
He also referenced former Leeds team-mate Rob Burrow, who died earlier this month after his long battle with MND. Hall said: “It's been an emotional week with people - Rob - not being here any more so I've tried to enjoy it a little bit. I've been telling myself to get my head down and all that. I'll enjoy it. Why not? The people turned out in good fashion. They'd been waiting for me to get it and they sang in good numbers, so it was pleasing. It has been a tough week. I'm normally really good with my emotions; I can put up a brick wall. People who know me, team-mates, know I have a great poker face. But it got me, as it would do.”
