Arizona teen, 18, goes to the dentist to have four teeth extracted before bizarre chain of events leaves him frothing at the mouth

An Arizona teen is at war with his dentist after the physician refused to hand over his teeth following an extraction.

Samuel Vaughan, 18, got four teeth removed by experienced dentist Dr Ryan Barney, 53, at his practice in Benson.

The patient was expecting to leave with the teeth in hand, but was left incensed when the dentist denied his request.

He was even more furious to learn that the teeth had been destroyed following the procedure.

'I entered the office with the full expectation of returning with the four extracted teeth in my possession (and was never once prior to the appointment told anything to the contrary),' Vaughan told My Herald Review via email.

'I left not only without the teeth, but feeling victimized and lied to.'

The teen was informed that the teeth could pose a health risk and so had been disposed of as is routine at the dental practice.

But Vaughan claims he is the victim of a 'theft' and 'fraud', and has since filed complaints against the dentist and with  the Arizona Dental Board.

He also went to the local police, who told him there was no criminal case to answer.

There are no federal laws prohibiting dentists from giving patients their extracted teeth, however best practice states that it should be avoided to minimize the spread of disease.

OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Standard considers teeth potentially infectious material and states they should be handled accordingly.

'We don't give out our adult teeth to anyone,' Dr Barney said. 'The blood on them can carry bloodborne diseases.

Vaughan was furious to learn that the dentist had disposed of his teeth and is now mulling legal action

'What if he had touched a door knob, or if someone else had touched the teeth and the blood?'

He confirmed that while other patients have made similar requests he has never made an exception in his 25 years as a dentist.

However, the explanation has done little to placate Vaughan, who is now contemplating legal action if his complaints are not dealt with.

'They’re my teeth and it's my blood,' he said. '100% I'm going to file a lawsuit. Justice isn't perfect, but it's the best thing we have.'

Dr Barney confirmed the dispute to DailyMail.com and said there was nothing further to add.
