NPA dismisses claims of Gwede Mantashe’s ‘imminent arrest’
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Investigating Directorate (ID) has refuted claims that ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe’s arrest is imminent.
The article was published in the Sunday World on 16 June.
NPA DENIES IMMINENT ARREST OF GWEDE MANTASHE
NPA ID spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the unit does not comment on its investigations, and a misstatement attributed to its office must be corrected.
Mamothame said the ID has not decided on or discussed “the imminent arrest” of Mantashe.
“It is unclear where these comments come from, but they are not from the ID. The ID will continue to do its work without fear, favour or prejudice and should be given the space to do so without any unnecessary and unwarranted speculations,” he said.
The ID is the same unit that arrested former Speaker of Parliament Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and former Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa who appeared in court recently.
COULD THE SUNDAY WORLD ARTICLE BE TRUE?
According to the publication, two of Mantashe’s allies confirmed that they are aware of plans to arrest him.
One of the alleged friends told the publication that the idea behind the arrest is to humiliate Mantashe and paint him as a corrupt individual.
“This isn’t a criminal matter but a political witch hunt,” the alleged friend told Sunday World.
