Elections 2024 live updates: Latimer upsets Bowman in N.Y., while Boebert wins new Colo. district

The race between Rep. Jamaal Bowman (N.Y.) and county official George Latimer was contentious, with accusations of racism and antisemitism. It was the most expensive House primary in history. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), who has survived several controversies, is projected to prevail, according to the Associated Press, in a crowded GOP contest in the state’s 4th Congressional District. She decided to run in the new district after a close general election against a Democrat in the 3rd District in 2022. The new district is more friendly to Republicans.

9:55 PM: Latimer ousts ‘squad’ member Bowman in Democratic primary in New York

elections 2024 live updates: latimer upsets bowman in n.y., while boebert wins new colo. district

George Latimer has been Westchester County executive for nearly six years.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer resoundingly defeated Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the Democratic primary for New York’s 16th Congressional District on Tuesday night, according to an Associated Press projection, ousting a member of the far-left faction of his own party after a blistering contest that divided the candidates on race, class and the Middle East conflict; and cost more than any House primary in history.

Latimer benefited from his own incumbency, building on deep roots in the community after decades spent in local politics. He was also aided by massive spending against Bowman, mostly by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC, which aims to unseat lawmakers it deems unsupportive of Israel. Total outside spending in the race neared $25 million.

From left, JR Bird, John Dougall, Mike Kennedy, Case Lawrence and Stewart Peay, candidates in the Republican primary for Utah's 3rd Congressional District, shake hands after a debate this month.

When Rep. John Curtis announced this year that he would vacate his House seat to run for Senate, a crowded field of contenders soon formed in a bid to represent his district, which covers much of the eastern half of the state.

Top contenders include hard-right state Sen. Mike Kennedy — a physician who opposed Romney in 2018 and sponsored a bill seeking to ban gender-affirming care for minors — as well as the more moderate entrepreneur Case Lawrence, founder of the trampoline parks company CircusTrix. Lawrence has mostly self-funded his House bid, loaning his campaign nearly $2.5 million, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

8:58 PM: Boebert brings Trump endorsement to race for Colorado’s 4th District

elections 2024 live updates: latimer upsets bowman in n.y., while boebert wins new colo. district

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) arrives at a House oversight committee hearing in July.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) is running for reelection in a new district in Tuesday’s Republican primary for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.

Boebert faces five GOP opponents after announcing last year she would leave behind the 3rd District, where she had a surprisingly close race in 2022. Her competitors include Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg, former radio host Deborah Flora and state Rep. Richard Holtorf.

While Boebert is new to the district, she has brought some notable advantages, including former president Donald Trump’s endorsement. She has also led the primary field in fundraising since April 1.

Boebert has attracted controversy since she first got to Congress in 2021. She has allied herself with Trump’s most vocal supporters in the House and endured a number of personal controversies, including an incident in which she was kicked out of a Denver theater last year.

The 4th District was previously held by Republican Ken Buck, who resigned earlier this year. There is also a special election Tuesday to finish Buck’s term, but Boebert chose not to run in it and the Republican nominee, Greg Lopez, is not running against Boebert for the full term.

The district covers much of the eastern half of Colorado, and it is not expected to be competitive in the general election.

8:38 PM: After Boebert fled, a crowded field races to take her place

elections 2024 live updates: latimer upsets bowman in n.y., while boebert wins new colo. district

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) is leaving Colorado's 3rd District to run for election in another.

A crowd of Republicans is vying to succeed Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) on Tuesday in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District after she decided to seek reelection elsewhere.

Boebert announced last year that she would switch districts after surviving a closer-than-expected race in the 3rd District two years ago. The Democrat who almost defeated her, Adam Frisch, is running again in the 3rd District and seeking to influence the GOP primary.

Frisch and an outside group have run ads that appear to try to elevate one of the Republican candidates, Ron Hanks, among his primary voters. Hanks is a former state representative who has echoed the election denialism of former president Donald Trump.

The Democratic meddling has gained the attention of the Congressional Leadership Fund, the top GOP super PAC involved in House races, which has countered with attack ads targeting Hanks.

Five other Republicans are running, including an attorney, Jeff Hurd, who has led the field in fundraising, collecting $1.1 million through June 5, according to Federal Election Commission records. He also has the support of Americans for Prosperity, the big-spending conservative group.

The winner will face Frisch, a former Aspen City council member who is running unopposed in his primary, in one of the most competitive House districts in the country.

The 3rd District covers much of the mountainous western half of Colorado.

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — A volunteer for Rep. Latimer, who is White, ignored the provocation and instead turned to a group of Black boys who ran up to shake his hand and take pictures. “I never knew you were so racist,” the Bowman volunteer continued.

8:21 PM: National divisions among Republicans take center stage in Colorado’s 5th District

elections 2024 live updates: latimer upsets bowman in n.y., while boebert wins new colo. district

Dave Williams is the chairman of the Colorado Republican Party.

Prominent GOP divisions are on display in the Republican primary Tuesday to succeed Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), who is not seeking reelection in the 5th District.

The two candidates are the controversial state GOP chair, Dave Williams, and conservative commentator Jeff Crank. Williams is endorsed by former president Donald Trump and members of the House Freedom Caucus; Crank has the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Lamborn.

Williams and Crank have diverged on some key issues for GOP voters. Williams opposes aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia, while Crank is more open to it. Both support a national abortion ban, but Crank wants exceptions for victims of rape and incest as well as when the life of the mother is at risk.

Third-party groups have attacked Williams over his rocky tenure at the state party, which has seen the party drop its traditional neutrality in primaries.

Crank has been the fundraising leader, collecting $510,000 through June 5, according to Federal Election Commission records. Williams had $251,000 in receipts, including a $100,000 loan to himself.

The district, which is centered on Colorado Springs, favors the GOP in the general election.

7:40 PM: Republicans face off for chance to flip Caraveo’s seat in November

Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.) won the Denver-area seat by less than one percentage point in 2022, giving Republicans a prime opportunity to flip it.

Two Republicans are facing off Tuesday for the chance to challenge Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.) in one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts.

The GOP primary for Colorado’s 8th District pits state Rep. Gabe Evans against former state representative Janak Joshi. The winner will take on Caraveo, a freshman lawmaker, in a Denver-area district that she won by less than one percentage point in 2022.

Evans has the support of former president Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), as well as Americans for Prosperity, the conservative group that backed Nikki Haley against Trump in the presidential primary this year.

Joshi has the backing of the Colorado GOP and has positioned himself to the right of Evans. He claims he is the “only pro-Trump, America First Republican” in the race — even though Trump has endorsed Evans.

Evans had $646,000 in campaign receipts through June 5, including a $20,000 loan to himself, according to records with the Federal Election Commission. Most of Joshi’s campaign funding over the same period came from $150,000 in self-funding.

The district spreads north from Denver to outside Fort Collins.

The Cook Political Report rates the race a “toss up.”

The roundtable comes as the Trump campaign has taken aim at President Biden’s handling of the economy. Trump will look to capitalize on perceived negative views of the economy and court Black voters who could prove essential in his hopes of winning key swing states.

Participating in the event are two of Trump’s vice-presidential shortlist contenders, Donalds and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

7:01 PM: Ocasio-Cortez faces long-shot challenger in New York 14th

elections 2024 live updates: latimer upsets bowman in n.y., while boebert wins new colo. district

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) speaks at a campaign event with Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) on Monday in Mount Vernon, N.Y.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the group of liberal House members known as “the Squad” who has held the seat in New York’s 14th District since 2019, is facing a long shot primary challenge from 66-year-old investment banker Marty Dolan, who has targeted the congresswoman for her more progressive views.

Ocasio-Cortez has easily won reelection in this Bronx and Queens district. Still, Dolan believes he has a chance to unseat the congresswoman, telling City and State New York that he believes a majority of people in the district “are not for radical change” and that she has only won reelection in the past because the only people who participate in the primaries are her supporters.

“She's only had one primary since she was elected,” he said. “The voters don't think about the primary enough; they think about the general election. … I'd say her support is in a hardcore radicalized group of voters in Queens, [along with] a few in the Bronx. But they were behind the idea for change.”

Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, campaigned on Friday with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who faces a tough primary challenge in New York’s 16th District. Dolan had initially planned to run against Bowman, but backed away after George Latimer, a moderate county executive, jumped into the race.

“We know what it means to go toe to toe and stare down a barrel of big money,” Ocasio-Cortez said at the rally. “We know political intimidation … we know all of the reasons we should not succeed and yet we do anyway.”

John Avlon worked as a commentator for CNN before running for Congress.

Two Democrats are running for their party’s nomination in New York’s 1st District for a chance to unseat moderate Republican Rep. Nick LaLota, who has held the seat since 2023.

The Democrats are former CNN commentator John Avlon and chemist Nancy Goroff, who ran for the seat in 2020 but ultimately lost to Republican Lee Zeldin, who has since left Congress. Goroff didn’t run in 2022. In that election, the Democratic candidate, Bridget Fleming, lost to LaLota by 11 points — 55 to 44.

Avlon, who once worked as a speechwriter for former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), argued that he’s a better candidate than Goroff because she has already lost in the district once. Goroff, meanwhile, has emphasized her deep ties to the district — she has had an extensive career at Stony Brook University — and has attacked Avlon over his time living outside the area and in Manhattan.

LaLota is not facing any Republican challengers as he runs for reelection in this eastern Long Island district.

Republicans are holding a rematch in their primary race for New York’s 24th District, where incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) again faces attorney Mario Fratto, whom she defeated in 2022 by about 14 points.

Because the district is deep-red, whoever wins the race on Tuesday becomes the heavy favorite to win the general election. Tenney has held the conservative seat since 2023. She represented the 22nd District from 2017 to 2019, and from 2021 to 2023, but she moved to the 24th when district lines were redrawn.

Fratto, who has partly self-funded his campaign, is running to Tenney’s right. He has called out Tenney for her decision to switch districts, while Tenney has accused Fratto of having ties to white supremacists. Former president Donald Trump endorsed Tenney in the race.

Two Democrats in New York’s 22nd District — Sarah Klee Hood and John Mannion — are seeking to unseat vulnerable Republican Rep. Brandon Williams, who has held the swing seat since last year. President Biden won the district by 12 points in 2020.

Mannion, a former teacher, is a New York state senator, while Klee Hood, an Air Force veteran, is the DeWitt town councilor. Both live in Syracuse, N.Y., and the race presents one of Democrats’ best pickup opportunities in New York this year.

Policy-wise, both Democrats support a similar agenda. On the trail, Mannion has received significant campaign funding from teachers’ unions, including New York State United Teachers. In a campaign ad cut for the National Education Association, teachers from the district hail Mannion as someone who “understands teachers.”

Klee Hood, meanwhile, has sought to highlight her Air Force career, and she has spoken openly about her experience receiving abortion care during her time in the military.

Williams, one of the most vulnerable Republicans in Congress, is running unopposed in Tuesday’s Republican primary. The business owner won the district by just one point in 2022.

Supporters of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. protest outside the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif., on June 21. CNN will host a debate between President Biden and former president Donald Trump, but Kennedy did not meet the qualifications to participate.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Tuesday that he’ll answer the same questions Donald Trump and President Biden are asked on the debate stage Thursday through a newly launched website.

Kennedy, who did not meet the polling or ballot access requirements set by CNN ahead of the debate, said he would not be “silenced,” accusing the network of “colluding” with the Biden and Trump campaigns to block him from the stage. He filed a Federal Election Commission complaint with these allegations ahead of the deadline to qualify for the debate. Still, he was unable to get on enough states’ presidential ballots or to meet the 15 percent threshold on four qualified national polls, making him ineligible to join Biden and Trump onstage in Atlanta on Thursday.

“I’m going to be on that debate stage with or without their permission,” he said in a video posted on X, the platform formerly called Twitter.

Kennedy cited a Washington Post report that Biden and Trump campaign officials had discussions with people from the network, and Biden advisers told CNN that the president would only participate if the debate was one-on-one with Trump.

Kennedy’s website — therealdebate.com — says it will have a live broadcast “powered by X.” It was not clear from the website or Kennedy’s video whether he will respond to Trump’s and Biden’s comments during the debate or show any part of the CNN broadcast. The Kennedy campaign did not immediately respond to questions about Thursday’s plans.

4:43 PM: GOP Senate candidate says he’s familiar with Black culture because he visited Africa and runs homeless shelters

U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde speaks during a Wisconsin rally with former president Donald Trump earlier this month.

Republican Eric Hovde, who is running for Senate in Wisconsin, said he is familiar with Black culture because he has spent “a lot of time” in Africa and because he runs “homeless shelters for abandoned kids.”

Hovde made the comments in an interview with Wisconsin station 101.7 The Truth while participating in a Juneteenth celebration in Milwaukee. During the interview, Hovde noted that that was the first time he participated in a Juneteenth celebration and acknowledged that he didn’t know much about the holiday — which has come to symbolize the end of slavery in the United States — until about a decade ago.

“I really don’t think a lot of Americans really understood that,” he said. “Then I started to learn about it, and it’s become a lot more popular.”

Host Ben Hooks asks Hovde if there’s anything he’s “going to take away from this that you didn’t know about Black culture before that, you know of today.”

“Look, I’ve spent a lot of time in Black culture,” Hovde replied. “I’ve spent a lot of time in places like Africa, because I have homeless shelters for abandoned kids and rescuing kids … out of the streets. And I’ve been involved in schooling and charter schools and things of that nature.”

The candidate then told the hosts that, earlier in the celebration, a man told him about Wisconsin’s history with slavery.

“There actually was slavery in Wisconsin in a spot where they were mining lead by Jefferson Davis, I never knew that,” Hovde said. “I thought that never existed in Wisconsin but there was this one spot for a period of time.”

According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, enslaved people were held in the state for more than a century.

President Biden and Donald Trump each amplified the case of a particular undocumented immigrant last week, using vastly divergent language in a preview of the sharp contrast they plan to draw on immigration during their debate Thursday.

At a June 18 rally in Racine, Wis., Trump railed against a man from El Salvador accused of killing a mother of five, calling him an “animal.” Earlier, at the White House, Biden praised “angels” like Javier Quiroz Castro, a nurse who served covid patients.

Mark Robinson in North Carolina on Feb. 17, 2024.

Mark Robinson, the Republican gubernatorial nominee in North Carolina, has a well-documented history of controversial remarks, including on abortion. His Democratic opponent, Josh Stein, the state’s attorney general, is seeking to use the comments against him, including in a new ad.

Taking a similar tack as other ads aired by Stein’s campaign, it shows Robinson talking about abortion in various video clips as they play on televisions, iPads and phones that are being watched by women.

In one clip, Robinson describes abortion as “killing a child because you aren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.”

“Mark Robinson must never be our governor,” the ad concludes.

Items with classified documents kept at Mar-a-Lago along with newspapers and other material.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Special counsel Jack Smith revealed new photos in a court filing Monday evening that depict how haphazardly Donald Trump stored classified materials at his Florida property post-presidency, with golf shirts stuffed into boxes alongside the sensitive materials, newspaper clippings and other mementos.

The images — a grab-bag of national security secrets, souvenirs and various odds-and-ends — are part of prosecutors’ effort to show that the dozens of boxes containing government materials at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and private club were so messy and disorganized that investigators could not preserve the precise order of the contents they retrieved.

12:22 PM: The deep, generational skepticism that’s influencing the 2024 race

President Biden delivers remarks during an at The White House on June 18.

One of the underrecognized elements of the country’s political tensions is the unusual generational split that exists at the moment. America is getting more gray and less White, both trends that overlap with age, given that the increased racial diversity the country is seeing is largely a function of younger people. Power is transitioning from the former to the latter, too quickly in the eyes of many older Americans and too slowly in the eyes of many younger ones.

President Biden and his reelection bid are caught in the turmoil.

When President Biden, 81, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, 78, take the debate stage Thursday, they’ll be making history as the two oldest major-party candidates in American history to vie for the Oval Office. They are also both at least 16 years older than the median age of world leaders.

It’s no surprise that world leaders are often older than the people they govern.

11:14 AM: Romney’s Senate seat up for grabs in Utah

Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah) is facing off against Riverton, Utah, Mayor Trent Staggs in Tuesday’s Republican primary for the seat held by Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who isn’t running for reelection.

Staggs has former president Donald Trump’s endorsement and won the most votes in Republicans’ nominating convention in April. But Curtis has raised more money than Staggs and has the backing of two super PACs, Conservative Values for Utah and Defend American Jobs, which together have spent more than $8.8 million backing him.

Conservative Values for Utah is largely funded by the Republican megadonors Jay Faison and Rob Walton. Defend American Jobs is funded by the crypto industry.

Curtis is closer to the Romney mold than Staggs. He founded the Conservative Climate Caucus and has not endorsed Trump, although he has said he will support the Republican nominee for president. He’s a member of the Republican Governance Group and the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus in the House.

Brad Wilson, a former Utah House speaker, and the business executive Jason Walton are also running for the nomination.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin is proposing a rewrite of the budget the General Assembly passed last month.

RICHMOND — Donald Trump and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) will appear in public together this week for the first time as the former president campaigns in Virginia, a blue-trending state that has twice rejected Trump but could be in play this year.

With a rally planned for Friday afternoon in Chesapeake, Trump will showcase an apparent shift in his relationship with the governor as much as with ordinary voters in Virginia, where two recent polls show the race for president tied.

9:50 AM: Bowman’s challenger says primary is not a referendum on progressive politics

Westchester County Executive George Latimer (D) tried Tuesday to localize his highly watched primary challenge against Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), which has garnered national attention because of the amount of outside money being spent against Bowman and the candidate’s views about the Israel-Gaza war.

When asked by a CNN host what his victory would mean, Latimer replied, “I think what it says is Jamaal Bowman got out of step with the district.” He also accused Bowman of being “out there as a spokesperson for a point of view rather than representing people who have legitimate needs in the Bronx and Westchester.”

When asked directly if the race is a “referendum on progressive politics of your party,” Latimer said no. He said that as Westchester County executive, he has run “the most progressive county in New York State.” Then, he added: “The positioning of this race as a progressive against an establishment conservative isn’t accurate. It works because the demographics appear to be that.”

When asked if he would support raising taxes on wealthy people, which Bowman supports, Latimer said, “when we have the budget that shows where the tax money is going to go for that it makes sense.” Latimer added: “To generically say ‘I just want to raise taxes,’ I think that’s an ideological statement, not a practical statement.”

Bowman has been critical of Israel’s military response to Gaza’s Oct. 7 attack, which led the American Israel Public Affairs Committee to run millions of dollars worth of ads attacking Bowman as out of touch with the district. Bowman responded at a rally over the weekend with an explicative-filled speech.
