Toronto's largest Pow Wow shares Indigenous culture
The City of Toronto continues to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Month. Our Audra Brown captures the sights and sounds of a traditional powwow today at Fort York. It's a really beautiful spectacle to see. The Nami Res powwow is Toronto's largest. Everyone's welcome. Our people have always welcomed everyone. The centerpiece of the City of Toronto's National Indigenous Peoples Day Festival, it's an army. REZ is an Indigenous organization. We started by operating shelter for people that needed emergency shelter that were experiencing homelessness. Over the years, we've grown to provide a multiple amount of services. Now we provide housing as well. It's our 23rd annual Powell. It features traditional dancing, drumming and performances, as well as craft and food vendors. Organizers say it reflects the richness and unique offerings of Indigenous culture. Well, it's really important to have Powells in big centers like Toronto. Everywhere we go on Turtle Island, our ancestors have touched and our culture should be everywhere. To keep our culture alive, we need to keep doing these events and invite people to come out and learn. Those attending for the first time said the event was a powerful experience. It's a feeling that I can't explain truthfully. It's empowering and just loving and so powerful and strong and yeah, just really, really like it. Bringing everyone together. Like even if we are coming from different places, different backgrounds, we have something that we have in common and connect us all together. And that hope for connection and teaching will continue. At dozens of pow wows having across Ontario this summer. At Fort York, Browns City News.
