Scotland will be looking to qualify for the knockout stages of a major international football tournament for the very first time in their history.

But Steve Clarke’s men will have to do it the hard way, having been placed in a difficult group with Germany, Switzerland and Hungary.

The Tartan Army have turned up in Germany in high spirits – and in their thousands – as Scotland look to make it out of the group and into the Round of 16.

Let’s take a look at Scotland’s European Championship history.

When was the last time Scotland qualified for the Euros?

Scotland last appeared in the European Championships at Euro 2020, drawn in Group D alongside England, Croatia and Czech Republic.

But it was largely a tournament to forget for the Scots, finishing bottom of the group as they were dumped out in the group stage.

Their campaign opened with a 2-0 defeat to Czech Republic in Glasgow, before holding England to a 0-0 draw at Wembley and then finishing with a 3-1 loss to Croatia.

How many times has Scotland played in the Euros?

Euro 2024 is the fourth time Scotland has played in the Euros, having first participated in the European Championships in 1992.

Scotland opened up with defeats to Netherlands and Germany, before ending their campaign on a positive note with a 3-0 win over the Soviet Union.

The team qualified the next European Championships, Euro 1996, with the Tartan Army making the short journey down south to cheer on the team in England.

Their opening game finished as a respectable 0-0 draw with the Netherlands, before then losing to England at Wembley.

A win over Switzerland in their final group game was not enough to stop Scotland being knocked out in the group stage.
