SINGAPORE – The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has clinched two awards at a large-scale air combat exercise held in Alaska.
The RSAF Peace Carvin V detachment won Top Fighter Generation Squadron, and Captain Tan Yi won Outstanding Mission Commander at Exercise Red Flag – Alaska, hosted by the United States Air Force (USAF), said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) on June 15.
For the exercise, held from May 30 to June 14, the RSAF deployed 14 F-15SG and 10 F-16 fighter aircraft and more than 300 personnel from its Peace Carvin II and Peace Carvin V detachments.
More than 90 aircraft, including the USAF’s F-16 and A-10 and the Indian Air Force’s Rafale, took part in the exercise, which involved a series of air combat and strike training missions in a simulated combat environment.
Selected RSAF personnel assumed mission commander roles and led operations involving up to 50 aircraft each time, said Mindef.
“The large airspace and complex training scenarios provided valuable and realistic training for the RSAF’s air and ground crew to hone their operational competencies,” it added.
The RSAF has taken part in Exercise Red Flag – Alaska, previously known as Exercise Cope Thunder, since 1984.
Its participation underscores the excellent and longstanding defence ties between Singapore and the US, enhances professionalism and cooperation among participating forces and allows the RSAF to benchmark itself against other leading air forces, said Mindef.
