Media coverage played large role in prosecution of killer: Saskatchewan attorneys
The Crown's role is to put the evidence before the court. Sometimes that takes a long time. In this case there were many twists and turns. The discovery of the murder weapon partway through the trial led to a delay, but that was very important evidence as described by the justice. Let me just say in addition to that, that this matter has been ongoing for longer than most trials. I would say you have, but justice not only needs to be done, but it needs to be seen to be done. And so if there's an application to reopen the case or an application to have other evidence heard the judge. As he always does, took everything very seriously and sometimes that causes delays the court. It was through no fault of the court, but sometimes those decisions take some time to make. And when there's that many types of applications and whatnot, things take time. And we also had COVID to deal with as well. So just in addition to what Corey has said in terms of the discovery of the murder weapon that came about. As a result of an adjournment that was requested by defense counsel at that point in time. So we definitely couldn't have seen that coming. But that wasn't a huge obviously discovery that took place because the matter was in the media. So when we talk about the importance of the media in terms of matters such as this, the media played a huge part in this case, to be perfectly honest, because of that, that's how the murder weapon came to be. Turned over to the police because of media coverage.
