Protests against Armenian Prime Minister over proposed peace treaty with Azerbaijan
Chaos in the Armenian capital Yerevan, as police try to get mass protests under control. These are far from the first demonstrations at parliament calling on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to resign. We have blocked many streets in the city centre. The police used violence without presenting legal justification, detaining people from the sidewalks after a six week war in 2020. Azerbaijan launched a swift operation last September to retake the region of Nagorno Karabakh, effectively held by Armenia since the 1990s. It led to a mass exodus of the majority of the region's 120,000 ethnic Armenians. There are no words to describe the village was heavily shelled. Almost no one is left in the village. Most people have been evacuated. In April, as part of a peace deal, Armenia agreed to hand over four villages to Azerbaijan. To demarcate the border, but protesters see that as a betrayal. And now you can see how police officers are supervising this place, making sure the lands are de mined in front of the enemy and the village territories be handed over under unclear conditions. Shushik has been living in one of the four villages for 73 years and has always known it as Armenian territory. It's already been two weeks since they were protesting, but what will it change? Nothing. Who is going to listen to them as the peace treaty is finalized? Thousands are still hoping the president will.
