Pat Hoberg gambling investigation, explained: Umpire disciplined for violating MLB's sports betting policies
MLB has been littered with gambling scandals throughout the 2024 season.
From Shohei Ohtani and Ippei Mizuhara to David Fletcher, the league has been busy with investigations behind the scenes. The most recent culprit of gambling violations is umpire Pat Hoberg.
MLB became aware of the situation during 2024 spring training, pulling Hoberg off the field amid the investigation. He has not called a game in 2024, last appearing in an MLB game in 2023.
Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported that MLB has disciplined Hoberg for his violations. Hoberg is appealing the decision to MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.
Hoberg began his umpiring MLB games in 2017. He famously called a "perfect game" in Game 2 of the 2022 World Series.

Pat Hoberg gambling investigation, explained
MLB completed its investigation of Hoberg on Friday, June 14, and decided to discipline the umpire for the gambling violations.
"While MLB’s investigation did not find any evidence that games worked by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way, MLB determined that discipline was warranted," MLB said in a statement.
Hoberg has appealed the decision, so that's all the information made public at the moment. Manfred will hear the appeal.
