Russia's invasion of Ukraine can't be solved by encouraging Kremlin's aggression - Mattarella

Russia's invasion of Ukraine cannot be resolved by merely encouraging Kremlin aggression. Peace can only come when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine are restored, according to Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

According to him, Italy and many international partners have rallied to support Ukraine, upholding the principle that solidarity must be extended to countries subjected to aggression violating international law and the UN Charter.

"No state, no matter how powerful or how equipped it is with a menacing nuclear arsenal can think of violating principles, including the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of another country without facing sanctions," he said.

Mattarella added that the conclusion of two world wars and the collapse of the Soviet Union brought new hope to Europe.

"Russia has taken on the great historic responsibility of having brought war back to the heart of the European continent," he said.

The Italian president added that Russia's invasion of Ukraine is not just a regional conflict, as Moscow seeks global influence.

Italy's assistance to Ukraine

Italy provides multifaceted assistance to Ukraine, both military and humanitarian. Rome has allocated over 2.2 billion euros in aid to Kyiv.

In late February 2024, Italy and Ukraine signed a security guarantee agreement which includes provisions for economic, diplomatic, and military assistance.

Italy's Minister of Defense, Guido Crozetto, recently said that Rome will soon approve a new package of military aid for Ukraine. According to Italian media reports, it will include the SAMP/T system.
