Labour's millionaire 'megadonor' Dale Vince demands a new 'meat tax'

Millionaire Labour megadonor Dale Vince has demanded a new meat tax in order to push Brits into veganism and vegetarianism.

Vince, the millionaire owner of the all-vegan Forest Green football club, said that a meat tax would 'steer people's behaviour' towards more sustainable food choices.

He said that this was essential to prevent global warming from taking more of an effect on the planet.

'Red meat is the most destructive form of meat that we have available to us in terms of human health and planetary impact', the Labour donor and former Just Stop Oil bankroller told the Sun.

'And so it makes sense to put a tax on that to steer people's behaviour. That's how taxes work, it has worked before.'

It's not clear if Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, a former vegetarian, supports this measure.

Starmer, who was seen on Sunday cooking up a tandoori salmon on TV in order to curry favour with voters, has in recent years started eating fish again after spending years as a vegetarian.

He previously admitted to longing for bacon sandwiches.

'I gave up as a matter of principle years ago on the basis that eating meat wasn't the right thing for the body and the planet but I have to say, I miss meat.'

Asked what he specifically missed he looked wistful as he added: 'Oh, bacon sandwiches, chicken curry, you name it, almost everything!

'So, this is hard work for me but my wife has been vegetarian for many years longer than I have.'

Vince made headlines this year after it was revealed he donated £1.5million to Starmer's election warchest

Vince made headlines this year after it was revealed he donated £1.5million to Starmer's election warchest, now expected to be at around £35million.

The Labour Party collected nearly £9million in the last quarter of 2023, according to Elections Commission data.

Vince is also expected to donate up to £5million this year.

He said earlier this year that the general election, which was today announced by Rishi Sunak to be taking place on July 4, is 'the most important of our lifetimes' and wants to bring in 'the greenest government we have ever had'.

Last year, Vince revealed he had abandoned his once-staunch support for Just Stop Oil so that he could concentrate his efforts on getting Labour elected.

He said that future protests by the eco-zealots would be 'pointless' and 'counterproductive' to the aim of protecting the environment.

In a statement Mr Vince applauded 'the conviction and the commitment of these activists and their bravery in the face of an increasingly hostile state'.

Asked what he specifically missed he looked wistful as he added: 'Oh, bacon sandwiches, chicken curry, you name it, almost everything'

But he went on to add: 'Recent actions by this government make it clear that no amount of protesting will prevent them drilling in the North Sea.

'And while I understand the frustration that people feel, I believe that further protests and the disruption that comes with them are pointless. I would go further and say they would be counterproductive. This government is intent on drilling come what may and will welcome further protest as it feeds their new culture war.'

He said he will instead focus on a new campaign called Just Vote, which aims to encourage people to exercise their democratic right.

'It's a fact of our electoral system that only one of two parties can form the next government; we want to bring a focus to this reality and to the opportunity that we have - to elect a green government, one that will embrace the opportunities we face, rather than make an enemy of them - and use them to tackle the long list of issues we face as a country.'
