Brazilian president will not attend peace summit on Ukraine

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has decided not to attend the peace summit on Ukraine scheduled for June 15-16 in Switzerland, citing CNN Brasil.

The Swiss government specifically invited Lula during a personal meeting between Swiss Chancellor Ignazio Cassis and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on April 30.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also invited the Brazilian president to participate in the summit during a recent interview.

However, in the opinion of Lula and representatives of the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is no point for the Brazilian leader to attend a summit that "does not engage both sides in resolving the conflict."

According to Brazilian diplomatic sources, Lula and Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met this week and decided that the delegation representing the country at the summit would not be headed by the president.

It has not yet been determined who will take on this role.

Global Peace Summit

The Global Peace Summit will take place in Switzerland on June 15-16, 2024. This event, initiated by Ukraine and Switzerland, aims to find ways to resolve international conflicts and establish sustainable peace on the planet.

Russia did not receive an invitation to this summit.

Meanwhile, leaders from over 150 countries, as well as representatives of international organizations and civil society, are expected to attend the event.

Recently, it was reported that diplomats have focused on a narrow set of goals to ensure the participation of China and other countries of the so-called Global South during the preparations for the summit on Ukraine's peace plan.
