Last Wednesday, Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah rebuked the Malaysian Football League (MFL) for fining Selangor FC RM100,000 and docking points.

This is after Selangor FC skipped a charity match with JDT - that it wanted to postpone but was rejected - out of fear of attacks against its players.

A day after the rebuke, the MFL lightened its sentence on Selangor FC.

This, in turn, triggered JDT owner and Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who railed that errant football clubs can now just appeal to their state sultans to intervene.

Tunku Ismail also remarked that there was a "real tokong" of Malaysian football, but it is not clear who he meant by this.

Race quotas

The government says it is taking a "bold step" by guaranteeing spots in matriculation programmes for all SPM students who score 10A’s or higher, regardless of race.

However, in the same announcement, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that bumiputera quotas for matriculation programmes will still be maintained.

The bumiputera quota is 90 percent, with only 10 percent for non-Malays.

True to Anwar's penchant for announcements without details, how exactly the new guarantees to non-Malays will co-exist with the 90 percent bumiputera quota is unclear.

The Education and Higher Education Ministries have been tasked to iron out the details.

Anwar's Hamas line

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed on Tuesday that those criticising the government over the Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) takeover plan, are "more Hamas than Hamas".

He said he had discussed the matter of Israeli-linked interests investing in Malaysia with the Hamas leadership, and that they found it to be a non-issue.

Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin, however, accused Anwar of lying.

He cited a statement issued by Hamas on the same day as Anwar's remarks, which said that the group backs all efforts to boycott those backing Israel's Zionist regime.

Blackrock group - which is set to be the beneficiary owner of a company involved in the MAHB takeover - has strong ties with Israel and its military.
