Analyst shares why Packers' Jordan Love could become 'top-tier' QB
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love.
For a piece published Tuesday, Ted Nguyen of The Athletic shared how Jordan Love showed across his first full season as the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback that he could become a "top-tier" player at the position as soon as this coming fall.
"Love threw for 32 touchdowns and, according to Pro Football Focus, his turnover-worthy play rate was the 29th-lowest among qualifying quarterbacks (2.6 percent)," Nguyen explained. "...In the last quarter of the season, he looked completely comfortable in his process pre- and post-snap. In Weeks 10-18, Love ranked second in expected points added (EPA) per dropback on throws without play action."
After the 2023 Packers endured a four-game losing streak and fell to 2-5 on the campaign, general manager Brian Gutekunst hinted that the season's final 10 contests would be "very important" regarding the franchise's short-term and long-term futures.
Love responded by helping Green Bay earn a playoff berth with a record of 9-8, and he then guided his club to an impressive 48-32 wild-card postseason victory at the Dallas Cowboys.
Love and the Packers later suffered a 24-21 divisional-round loss at the San Francisco 49ers.
"Though a quarterback’s stats under pressure could be volatile from season to season, it’s a good sign that Love ranked seventh in EPA per dropback with pressure in his first season as a starter," Nguyen continued. "...He ranked second in EPA per dropback in Weeks 10-18 on throws under 2.5 seconds. He was one of the best quick-game throwers in the league."
Per Pro Football Reference, Love finished the 2023 regular season ranked ninth in the NFL among qualified players with a 62.1 adjusted QBR, 11th with a 96.1 passer rating and ninth with a 47.6 percent passing success rate.
On Monday, The Athletic noted that Love could put pen to paper on a massive contract extension before training camp opens on July 22. The 25-year-old is widely expected to become one of the league's highest-paid players.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Love tied for fifth among the betting favorites at +1400 odds to win the Most Valuable Player Award for this season. Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson and 2023 MVP finalist Brock Purdy were also at +1400 odds.
