The Chicago Blackhawks drafted John Mustard of the Waterloo Black Hawks with the 67th pick in the 2024 draft.
This third-round pick was their first selection on Day 2 of the draft after trading up and drafting three times in the first round. Mustard is a player who skates very well and competes at a high speed at all times. He uses his speed to do a lot of good things on the ice every shift including beating defenders, getting to open space, and hunting pucks.
This 6-foot-1, 186-pound center is a shooter more than a passer and he produced 29 goals and 56 points in 60 games in the USHL in 2023-24. He competes and goes to the net as much as he can looking for anything from tips to rebounds to good scoring opportunities because of his strong shot.
Mustard was expected to be drafted a lot higher than 67 which the Blackhawks should be happy about. He needs to work a bit on his hockey sense and playmaking ability, but his offensive talent overshadows that. Chicago got a solid prospect with their fourth pick in the draft this year.
