A perfect Indo German collaboration of Bharatnatyam and guitar, of ragas and rasas, of Raga Bhairavi and Malkaus with Shiva Shakti stories enthralled the German audience in Frankfurt and Giesen. “The audience at Germany were mesmerised by the Markandeya Puranas, the tales of Shiva and Kali, the concept of Ardhanareeswarar, Shiva’s Tandav ,of Sati’s self-immolation and how Parvati calmed him down by singing Malkaus in his ears. Markus Schmidt, connected to Kolkata, has spent many years learning sitar here. I performed Durga opera, Thilaana and the Shiva stotrams followed by the Dance of Kali piece that blended Adi tal and the Raudram rasa to Markus’s fingerstyle acoustic guitar and Raga Bhairavi played on the sitar. An appreciative German audience was mesmerised and curious , enquiring about the different manifestations of Shakti , the divine feminine and how Shiva is the ultimate feminist,” said Sohini.
Sohini and Markus are currently working on Kalidasa’s Meghdootam, to celebrate Goethe’s translations of Kalidasa, and the cultural connection between India and Germany and Sanskrit poetry. “It is our simple way of bringing the world a little closer together,” said Sohini.
