New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT Cell Head Amit Malviya on Saturday reacted to the canopy collapse at Gujarat's Rajkot airport, stating that the tearing away of the canopy cloth due to heavy wind and rain should not be equated with infrastructure collapse. He was referring to the canopy collapse incident at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, where one person was killed and several others were injured on Friday morning.
“Rajkot airport’s canopy cloth tearing away because of heavy wind and rain is not the same as infrastructure collapsing,” Malviya wrote in a post on X.
He added, “And no, we shouldn’t blame Nehru for it, because he didn’t build airports on the scale that were required. Left to him, we would all be traveling in bullock carts, certified by DRDO. Besides, just yesterday MoCA has ordered security review of all small and big airports in the country.”
According to Airport Director Digant Bahora, the canopy collapsed due to waterlogging caused by rain. The incident took place outside the temporary terminal, and no injuries were reported.
Earlier on Friday the canopy of a roof collapsed at Delhi airport's Terminal T1, leaving one dead. Several vehicles, including cabs, were damaged in the incident. The collapse involved the canopy sheet and support beams, which damaged cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. During the rescue operations, a driver was rescued from a cab that had been hit by a falling iron beam.
Following the incident, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated that he was overseeing the situation and rescue operations were underway. "Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at the site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing," he wrote in a post on X.
