Gareth Southgate remains under fire with struggling England continuing to flatter to deceive at Euro 2024 - but he is continuing to break new ground in the hot seat.

His blushes were spared after the Three Lions fought back from the brink of a last-16 elimination to beat Slovakia with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane both on target.

Southgate's side were seconds away from a shock defeat before Bellingham hooked in a jaw-dropping overhead kick to send the contest to extra-time.

Harry Kane then headed home the winner shortly after the restart to book a quarter-final showdown with Switzerland and likely spare the manager from the sack.

And there was more good news for Southgate after he set a new record.

Indeed, it has been revealed that he has now won more major tournament knockout games - seven - than every other England boss since 1966 combined.

Since taking charge in 2016, Southgate has overseen knockout victories against the likes of Colombia, Croatia and Germany at two World Cups and Euro 2020.

In fact, the 57-year-old has won seven of his 11 major knockout games at the helm, only losing to Croatia and Belgium in 2018, Italy in 2020 and France in 2022.

Excluding wins via penalty shootouts, Southgate has six victories, twice as many as any other Three Lions manager and more than the great Sir Bobby Robson.

A range of bosses have coached England in that period including the likes of Terry Venables, Glenn Hoddle, Steve McLaren and Fabio Capello - but all have failed to win silverware.

And while Southgate is still waiting for his first trophy, his record of seven knockout wins between 2018 and 2024 is more than the six mustered between 1968 and 2016.

Southgate said: 'It's strange, but I never felt tonight would be the end of our tournament.

'Even with the long throw, you felt there was hope. We can cause some chaos and something might drop. I didn't think the finish would be quite what it was!

'With 15 minutes to go, you're thinking Jude is out on his feet and should we take him off and put fresh legs on.

'But you know the sort of impact he can have on a game and those moments are why you stick with him at that time.'
