Bride-to-be's wedding invite warning after finding out little-known postal rule

A bride-to-be has warned other women from making a simple mistake while sending wedding invites.

Lindsay Adkison is a Tennessee-based content creator who shared the frustrating experience she had at the post office.

She explained to her more than 14,800 TikTok followers that she had attempted to send out her wedding invites with white wax seals, but she was unable to do so because of the post office's strict policy about 'embellished invitations.'

Lindsay explained in her clip, which got more than 723,100 views, that the post office gave her two options - either place an additional stamp on the envelope or take off the wax seals.

The frustrated bride-to-be expressed that she was stuck in limbo over what decision to make, because she called the new envelope addition, 'an ugly little fox stamp,' that she didn't want displayed.

She explained in the video: 'Did you know that these wax seals are a pain-in-the-butt to get through the post office?

'Apparently, these stamps don't cut it, and when I went to take them in yesterday, I was like, "Here's all my wedding invites. Send them out. Thank you so much. Love you."

'And they were like, "Oh honey, that's not gonna go through the machine. You have to have a special stamp," and I was like, "Okay, well hand the special stamp over."

'Is it just an additional stamp?... Anyways, I was like, "Hand it over," and it was an ugly little fox stamp.'

Lindsay continued: 'I was like, "No shot. I'm not putting that on my wedding invite" - maybe [on a] thank you card, maybe something else, maybe a bridal shower, baby shower - I don't know.

'But not on my wedding invite that I spent so much money on.

'And so I was like, "What do I do," and they were like, "Either take the wax-seal off, and put a sticker over it, or get the additional stamp."

'So now I have no idea where to get this additional stamp that's not [an] ugly little fox.'

'Anyways, I actually had no idea that you were supposed to have a specific stamp for wax seals.'

She warned other brides-to-be and said: 'So, if you're about to get married, or you're about to send out a wedding invite - anything with a wax seal - just know that the wax seal is a pain in the butt.

'It's not worth it, I don't think, and I honestly don't even think they're that cute - mainly cause I used the white when they were out of gold.'

She captioned the post: 'Please help.'

Many followers tried consoling the frustrated content creator.

One person wrote: 'Anytime I get a wedding invitation, the first thing I do is throw out the envelope. I really don't care what kind of stamp you use.'

A second person commented: 'I know it's your wedding and vision, but no one will think about the "ugly" stamp. In fact, most people will immediately throw away the envelope, and care more about your actual pretty invites.'

A third person added: 'I could never understand why anyone cared what the envelope for the invite looked like. It's literally gonna get filthy nasty from being handled in the mail.'

A fourth person wrote: 'Ma'am, its going on the envelope, not the invitation.'

Other followers offered helpful advice.

One person wrote: 'You can just do two forever stamps - it doesn't need a specific special stamp.'

'You should just need two forever stamps of any kind,' a second commented.

A third person added: 'They have butterfly non-machinable stamps on the USPS website.'

A fourth person wrote: 'You just need [an] additional postage for non-machinable mail. You can order stamps on USPS.'

'They need that stamp so they know not to put it through the letter sorter. I had wax stamps and bought the special stamp to not get it sorted. They did it anyways and half my invites got shredded,' a fifth person chimed in.

Lindsay posted a follow-up video addressing a follower who wrote: 'Maybe you could put them in another envelope so you can still send them and keep the wax seal on them.'

She responded: 'Unfortunately I did have the envelopes addressed as you can see.

'So I just don't want to have to readdress and then pay for more stamps. Another comment I got was, "just take the wax seal off."

'I totally would, except [that] I melted my own wax seal, and it's stuck on there until you rip the envelope, and I don't want to be the one to rip the envelope.

'I want the guest to be able to rip the envelope, so that's just totally not up to it.'

She ended up paying an extra $80 to add the additional stamps on all her wedding invites.

Lindsay comedically commented on the 'special stamp' that she was supposed to use and said: 'I mean it's cute, but it's not what I would prefer, but like I said, it's okay.

'I don't care - I just appreciate everyone's help, and I know when people get the invite, they're just gonna be like, "Oh invite," not "ugly little stamp."

According to the USPS, 'if you want to send a specially decorated envelope (like some wedding invitations), you can pay the extra fee for nonmachinable first-class mail items, bring your mail to the post office counter, and ask the retail associate to hand-cancel your embellished invitations.'

'For externally decorated invitations - if you use wax seals, strings, ribbons, etc., on your envelopes, don't try to send them exposed,' the service said.

'Instead, to make sure your envelopes arrive looking the way your designer intended, put them inside another envelope.'
