In a surprise announcement, the US Department of Justice revealed that it had cut a major deal to recover more than US$100 million in assets procured using funds stolen from 1MDB.
The deal was cut with none other than the alleged 1MDB mastermind, Low Taek Jho.
The DOJ did not reveal how it had got in touch with Low, or whether they knew his current whereabouts.
It is also unclear what motivated Low to cooperate with the DOJ, and whether he would be getting anything out of the deal.
Malaysian authorities have long maintained that they have been unable to locate Low, who is a wanted fugitive.

The general public’s consensus is that MPs are earning way too much in pensions.
In a poll, 96 percent of Malaysiakini readers said they want the pensions replaced with an EPF plan.
Meanwhile, other experts have opined that pensions could be capped at RM10,000 per month or be pegged to the average GDP growth over a period of time.

Is Langkawi for Muslims only?
Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan caused a stir when he suggested that Langkawi be positioned as a niche travel destination for Muslims.
However, Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor does not share the same sentiments.
He said that Langkawi should remain open to all and that the PAS-led state government is not entertaining ideas to make the island a Muslim-only vacation spot.
Last year, Sanusi had denied that non-Muslims visiting Langkawi were barred from wearing shorts or drinking alcohol.
