A posh Scottish bakery has caused a stir with people queuing for more than two hours to get their hands on baked treats.  

The Lannan Bakery in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, opened in July 2023 and quickly became a social media sensation boasting more than 61,000 followers on Instagram and hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok.

Owner and self-taught baker, Darcie Maher, 25, has become somewhat of an overnight sensation after her swanky menu of croissants, lemon tarts and orange custard pastries have driven locals wild.

Lannan Bakery - which recently won the coveted LA LISTE 'pastry opening of the year' award - opens at 8am and can attract queues of up to two hours long, with some customers often left disgruntled due to pastries running out.

In a social media post, Darcie said: 'Summer is here and Lannan is busier than ever - Viennoiserie is selling out by 10am and the queue is starting earlier each day.

'So starting from Thursday, in line with feedback from our customers, we’re putting a limit of two of each pastry per customer.

'This is something I’ve tried to avoid since we opened, but it’s now a necessary step to ensure as many of you as possible are able to try our pastries'.

The most popular pastries can sell out as quickly as two hours after opening, forcing  Darcie to undertake new measures to keep her customers happy.

Other items on the menu include a strawberry and almond tart, tiramisu, pistachio and white chocolate pain suisse and the bakery's signature Lannan custard slice.

People have taken to TikTok to rave about the bakery, including one local shopper who said she'd queued since 8:15am and it was 'worth the wait'.

Meanwhile Edinburgh-based customer Aimee Russell - who shared a clip of the queue - wasn't deterred and instead insisted on getting her hands on their 'delish renowned croissants'.

But not all customers have been so agreeable. Darcie told Edinburgh News that she has encountered verbal abuse by shoppers when pastries run out - despite her best efforts to ensure enough goes around.

The entrepreneur said the abuse - which occurs both online and in person - is 'really disheartening', especially after working gruelling 17 - 20 hour shifts to deliver the bakes.

She told the publication: 'My staff are working their very very best to keep up with the demand and we are still getting people coming in every day saying "you need to make more" and "it’s ridiculous you’re selling out – you need to try harder". It’s just really disheartening.

She added: 'We get four or five bad reviews a day on Google and at least two or three people coming into the bakery to complain. I can take a certain amount of negative comments but the amount we have been getting because of our success is completely uncalled for'.

Darcie taught herself to bake by reading about pastry, before honing her craft at bakeries and restaurants across the UK.

In 2021, she became known for her work on the bakery team at The Palmerston in Edinburgh, where she worked until achieving her dream of opening Lannan - the name of which was derived from the Scottish Gaelic word for 'house'.

After being named as one of the winners of the Pastry Opening of the Year Award at La Liste’s 2024 edition of the World Pastry Awards, she told The Scotsman that the bakery has 'surpassed anything I imagined it would be' and that to win the award was 'an honour'.
