How do Round of 16 games work at Euro 2024? Extra time and penalty shootout rules
Round of 16 games at Euro 2024 follow a single-elimination format. That means that all eight matches will be settled with one team progressing to the next stage, and the other being eliminated from the competition.
If a team wins the game in normal time, they advance to the next round. If scores are level after 90 minutes, an additional 30 minutes of extra time will be played. If the game remains tied at the end of the extra period, a penalty shootout will be required to determine who goes through.
The shootout starts with each side permitted five penalty kicks, taken by five different players. The order alternates between competitors, i.e. Team A shoots first, then Team B, then Team A again, etc. If a team is ahead after these first 10 penalties are taken, then they go through. If the shootout scores are level at this point, the 'sudden death' rule applies: if Team A scores a penalty, and Team B then misses, Team A will go through.
