Shifty Shellshock's cause of death announced as 90s music legend found dead aged just 49

Shifty Shellshock of Crazy Town fame died from an overdose, as confirmed by the band's manager Howie Hubberman. The Butterfly singer, whose real name was Seth Binzer, died on 24 June aged just 49 and his death was confirmed by the Los Angeles medical examiner.

The musician had a long history of substance abuse and had previously been admitted to hospital in 2012 after falling into a coma, but later recovered. He also appeared on reality TV shows such as Celebrity Rehab and Sober House.

Earlier this year he spoke candidly about his relationship with sobriety and self-love, sharing an intimate post on Instagram just two months ago, which read: "I'm a lover than a fighter ...but the one I need to love more Instead of fight with is myself .. mr shifty true Love # Sober alive and grateful (sic)".

Shifty Shellshock, the frontman of Crazy Town known for their hit Butterfly, has tragically passed away

His former manager Howie Hubberman has now spoken to People about the artist's struggles, saying: "Seth Binzer, after struggling with addiction and Crazy Town's rapid success with 'Butterfly,' never was able to reach out on a more successful level to deal with his addictions. We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here."

He added that the mix of prescription and street drugs led to Shifty's untimely and tragic death, telling the publication: "The cause of death was a combination of prescription drugs and street purchased drugs. Shifty was a friend and really wanted to get himself fixed - unfortunately no one had the exact tools to do this, myself included."

Shifty formed Crazy Town with Bret Mazur in 1999, and they shot to fame when their single Butterfly soared to the top of the US charts the following year. The song, which samples the Red Hot Chili Peppers' track Pretty Little Ditty, became a defining anthem of the early noughties and reached No 3 in the UK in April 2001. It also reached the top of the charts in several other countries including Austria, Denmark, and Norway.

Their debut album, The Gift of Game, was also a massive success, selling over 1.5 million copies. However, their 2002 follow-up Darkhorse didn't quite hit the mark, leading to the band parting ways.

They made a comeback in 2007 and were back performing live by 2009. Their third album, The Brimstone Sluggers, was released in 2015.
