Donald Sterling's infamous NBA racism scandal has been retold in a new FX miniseries chronicling the disgraced former Clippers owner's downfall in LA.

Yet while the subject is undoubtedly a powerful one, it seems casting choices for the show may have been slightly off key.

On the latest episode of ex-NBA star Carmelo Anthony and American TV personality The Kid Mero's 7pm In Brooklyn podcast - featuring New York Knicks power forward Julius Randle as a special guest - the trio took a closer look at some of the actors cast to portray famous basketball figures in the new 'Clipped' miniseries.

And as they got through more and more of the characters, it got funnier for them each time.

'Can you watch a hoop series when the casting is as bootleg as a Gucci bag on Canal Street?' Mero said before bursting into laughter.

They began by taking a look at the actors cast to play JJ Redick and Chris Paul, with Charlie McElveen and J. Alphonse Nicholson starring as the former Clippers duo.

The trio collectively expressed disapproval over the likeness while laughing in disbelief, before moving on to ex-LA coach Doc Rivers, played by legendary American actor Laurence Fishburne.

'Not Jimmy Jump Doc Rivers,' said Mero in a reference to Fishburne's iconic role in the 1990 movie 'Kings of New York'.

'That's serious?' asked a bemused Randle.

The Knicks star also added about the photo of Redick's character: 'They got JJ looking like he's on Wall Street bro.'

However, Anthony, Mero and Randle were left in stitches at the next photo from the miniseries.

Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry's character was then pulled up on the screen, with Randle saying: 'Dawg... what? What did that for real?'

'Imma watch it though for the entertainment,' he later admitted.

'Clipped' is based on the famous ESPN podcast 'The Sterling Affairs', which detailed Sterling's struggles as owner of the Clippers, as well as his marriage and the tape that broke the story which resulted in his lifetime ban from the NBA.

In April 2014, the American businessman was banned from the league for life and fined $2.5million after private recordings of him making racist remarks were made public.

One month later Sterling's wife Shelly sealed an agreement for the Sterling Family Trust to sell their stake in the team to current owner Steve Ballmer for $2billion.

Despite Sterling himself contesting that agreement in court, the NBA approved it in August of that year, with Ballmer still at the helm in LA a decade later.

The first five episodes of 'Clipped' are available to watch on Hulu, with the next set to be released on Tuesday July 2.
