Studio Ghibli Releases Exclusive Clothing Collection for Kiki's Delivery Service & More
Studio Ghibli is arguably responsible for some of the most iconic heroines in anime history. Now, the studio's official online shop is honoring several of these beloved characters with a fashionable new dress line inspired by the female leads of Castle in the Sky (1986), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) and The Secret World of Arrietty (2010).
Via Donguri Sora, Ghibli recently unveiled the aforementioned apparel line as part of its exclusive Donguri Closet collection. As shown below, the site's new "relaxwear" dress collection allows Ghibli fans to become the spitting image of their favorite anime heroines. Arrietty's "Blooming Garden" dress is the same rich crimson sported by the film's titular hero. For an added touch of "cuteness," the hem and sleeves feature the same red and green pattern shown on Arrietty's bedsheets. Kiki's dress -- notably the only one made with "ponte" fabric -- is the same rich ebony color worn by its namesake. The breast contains a small embroidered image of a chocolate cake -- a nod to a memorable scene where Kiki receives a tasty thank-you gift from one of her customers. Donguri Sora's Laputa Angel Wear dress is similarly adorned with embroidery of Sheeta's famous necklace. While these gowns are perfect for relaxing at home on a lazy summer's day, they are also moderately expensive, costing about 12,100 yen (roughly US$75.80) each.

Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky were both directed by Hayao Miyazaki -- the creative visionary who co-founded Ghibli alongside Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies), Yasuyoshi Tokuma (Angel's Egg) and current Studio Ghibli President Toshio Suzuki. The former film follows its titular protagonist, a 13-year-old witch-in-training who must successfully spend one year living out on her own. Using her ability to fly, she starts up a flying delivery business, earning money while helping the owners of a local bakery in return for room and board. The film is largely a coming-of-age tale, with Kiki having to overcome many different trials as she takes her first tentative steps into adulthood.
Castle in the Sky revolves around Sheeta and Pazu, two children who embark on a perilous journey to find a mythical floating island called Laputa. Unlike Pazu, Sheeta has an ancestral connection to Laputa, which she learns after discovering the origin of her family's antique pendant. Entranced by the stone's incredible powers, Pazu and Sheeta team up with a boisterous pirate gang to track down the elusive island. Along the way, they are pursued by Colonel Muska, a rogue government agent who hopes to use Laputa's advanced military technology to rule the world.

The Secret World of Arrietty Is Often Viewed as One of Studio Ghibli's Most Underrated Movies

Often considered one of the underrated gems of Ghibli's film library, The Secret World of Arrietty is based on Mary Norton's beloved 1952 children's novel The Borrowers. Like its literary counterpart, the film is set in a world populated by tiny people who survive by "borrowing" discarded items from the human world. While living alongside her mother and father near a human residence, 14-year-old Arrietty unwittingly attracts the attention of Sho, a kindly young boy who wishes to be her friend. Despite the fact that her people usually try to avoid humans, Arrietty finds herself drawn to him. While Sho tells no one of the borrower's existence, they are eventually discovered by a housemaid, prompting Sho and Arrietty to join forces in order to save her parents.
