Rickie Fowler tasted victory for the first time in more than four years at last year's Rocket Mortgage Classic. Now in his return to Detroit Golf Club as defending champ, he gets to taste something else.
At his pre-tournament presser on the eve of this year's tournament, Fowler was presented with his own . . . sandwich?
That's right, a sandwich. In a tradition (truly unlike any other) started last year, the Rocket Mortgage Classic honors its champions by creating a special concession for fans the following year. Hey, it's not quite hosting the Masters Champions Dinner, but it's a nice touch.
Last year, the "Finau Fitu" was served in honor of 2022 winner Tony Finau. And fans at Detroit Golf Club will be able to enjoy a "Rick's Pick" this week.
"So we worked with your wife, Allison, and your team to create what we call the Rick's Pick," Chef Colin John of caterer Forte Belanger said. "It's on a brioche bun with Boar's Head Cajun turkey with shredded lettuce, pickles, pepperoncinis, mayonnaise, and then it has vinegar, oil and oregano on it as well. So not crazy, we didn't want to overthink it, so I know sandwiches are one of your favorite foods. So dig in, let us know what you think."
"I appreciate it," Fowler responded. "This is one of my standard kind of go-to orders for lunch back home whether it's at the course or a local sandwich shop. Hopefully fans here will be able to enjoy it a little bit."
Assembled members of the media—never ones to turn down a free meal—also got to enjoy it:
Looks good! And the golf tee toothpick is a nice touch. Anyway, if you're going to the tournament this week, you'll be eating well.
