EXCLUSIVE: First Look at Werewolf by Night's New Marvel Red Band Series
CBR has an exclusive preview of Marvel Comics' new red-band series, Werewolf by Night. Jason Loo, the author bringing the series to life, also discusses with CBR what fans can expect in the new series and the upcoming Werewolf By Night: Blood Hunt one-shot.
The new red band Werewolf by Night #1 sees Jack Russell trying to live a simple life, but following the events of Blood Hunt, things are turned upside down in ways he never imagined. The new series comes labeled with a parental advisory and polybagged for its intensity. Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt stars Jake Gomez -- a new Werewolf by Night -- going down a dark path and will lead into the new story. Loo discusses the creation of the one-shot, arriving July 3, as well as the new Werewolf by Night Red Band series arriving Aug. 14. CBR also has a preview of pages from the Red Band series showing the titular character as he transforms near Elsa Bloodstone.

The Next Amazing Spider-Man Writer Is Revealed

CBR: How does it feel to be able to write a tie-in for such a huge Marvel event?
Jason Loo: I’m always excited when I get to play in the same sandbox with some cool people who bring in some rad ideas. But at the same time, I like to take my toys and play with them in a far corner of the box, so I can tell my own story within the large umbrella of this event. That way, readers can pick up my book and have a great time with it on its own.
The description for Werewolf by Night: Blood Hunt #1 reveals that the issue will take readers in a “dangerous new direction”. Can you further elaborate on this?
The story of Jake Gomez (aka the new Werewolf By Night) will be going into a darker path, and it starts with this book. It all takes place at an abandoned amusement park with a demonic ghost, some loitering teenagers, and, of course…VAMPIRES!
The solicit also mentions that the character will have a new look and abilities, what are some of his new abilities and what changes have been made to his appearance?
I don’t want to spoil the ending, but I’ll say “like father, like son”, but with sharper teeth. And oh yeah, cover artist Davide Paratore beautifully rendered Jake’s new werewolf look on the cover. SPOILERS!
You mentioned in a LinkedIn post a few months ago that your version of the Werewolf by Night will show us your dark side. What was it like to explore the darker side of storytelling?
You follow my LinkedIn?!! Surprisingly, it was something that came out naturally to me and my editors Lauren Amaro and Devin Lewis kept cheering me on the more violent I got with my writing. I want to bring the same thrill and excitement that fans got when they read the older Marvel horror magazines like Vampire Tales, Savage Tales, and Monsters Unleashed to name a few. This also applies to the new Werewolf By Night series I’m also writing, with the amazing Sergio Davila on art.
What are you the most excited for fans to see in your tie-in?
I really want readers to go in knowing very little about it like movie-goers watching a grindhouse movie without seeing the trailer and come out pleasantly entertained. Artist Adam Gorham really captures that cinematic horror vibe to a tee on every page. This book will be worth the price of admission, at the very least.
Speaking of the new series, news has only recently broken that it will star the original Werewolf by Night, Jack Russell! Can you give us any idea about what the original Werewolf by Night will be dealing with in his series?
One group happens to be the remnants of the Darkholders. Just a sad, lost bunch. And they will be joined by…someone that has a Marvel Legends action figure made of them. The character’s also currently doing some wild stuff before he makes his way to my series.
There is currently a lot of uncertainty in Jack’s life. Is there anyone who he can trust?
Yes. Elsa Bloodstone.
