The New York Times advised President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential election as "the greatest service he can render to his country." The journal also called his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, "an erratic, self-serving individual undeserving of public trust."
After the Biden-Trump debate, the New York Times editorial board wrote "For the Good of the Nation, President Biden Should Exit the Race," calling Biden "engaged in a perilous gamble. More skilled Democratic leaders can provide clear, persuasive, and active alternatives to Trump."
The editorial warned, "There is no justification for the party to jeopardize the nation’s stability and security by forcing voters to choose between Trump’s flaws and Biden’s shortcomings." It called this possibility "too significant a risk," urging "a stronger contender against the Republican nominee."
The editorial board noted that Biden's claim of being the greatest candidate to fight Trump and authoritarian dangers in 2020 "is no longer enough. Biden has changed in four years."
In the debate, Biden appeared "as a diminished version of a civil servant struggling to articulate his vision for a second term, to respond to Trump’s provocations, and to hold Trump accountable for his falsehoods, failures, and alarming plans." The editorial joked, "He struggled repeatedly to complete his sentences."
The New York Times said Biden's withdrawal and the Democratic Party's alternative nominee has "the greatest chance to preserve the nation's spirit. It would be Biden's most meritorious contribution to his nation."
Biden and his followers have time to back a new candidate, according to the New York Times. It noted that many democracies plan election campaigns in months.
The plea for a new Democratic candidate at this point of the campaign shows Trump's threat to the nation's ideals and institutions and Biden's incapacity to respond. The editorial highlighted polling and interviews showing Americans want new Trump opponents.
The journal warned that Trump's actions "hurt the economy, civil freedoms, and U.S.-foreign relations. The president blatantly lied about his actions and record."
The New York Times concluded their editorial by urging Democrats to speak truthfully to the party leader. "Close aides and advisors who supported Biden’s candidacy and shielded him from unscripted public appearances must acknowledge the damage to his standing and the improbability of him restoring it," the editorial stated. Biden and his supporters can still unite behind a different candidate.
